Ok guys, just bought a .338 Lapua Mag. REmington 700 Police MLR. I have absolutely no exerpience loading these. was going to buy a few match grade bullets to break it in but for 10 rounds I could have taken my wife to a steak dinner with the nicest bottle of wine in the house. 96$ for 10 Lapua scenars!!! Anyways, I bought 100 Lapua cases, and 100 300 grain smk's. I have got plenty or reloader 25, H-1000, imr4350.. I would really appreciate it if you could help me out with some good recipes. If anyone has this rifle, I would appreciate coal, ect. Thanks and aim small miss small

300gr SMK's are a good choice along with H1000 - both of which you have. You might (should?) find a good load at around 91 / 92 grains but as this is at the top end work up first. I seat mine to fit into a non CIP AICS mag (91.5 COAL) however you may as well take advantage of the full mag length. Might be worth checking distance to the lands, mine was pretty short for a Remington.

When I worked up this combination I started around 88 / 89, and saw pressure signs around about 90 grains. Its quite a stiff load and the MLR is not the heaviest of rifles - have fun!

I use the RL25 now but the IMR 4350 worked well also.spend little time at the reloading bench and more at the range. You went into a expencive Cal. But does what it was expected to do.

Re: Just bought a .338 Lapua Police Need Recipes!!!

I'm working up loads with quickload for Lapua 300s and 250s using RL25. I've been looking through the threads and many of the loads listed seem to be compressed 105% to 110% and way over the PSI limits of the gun. Im shooting a TRG-42.

For example with 300s and RL25 there are loads of 81.5 grains to 91.5 grains listed. According to quickload, 91.5 grains gives a fill of 110.4% and a psi of 79,086 which is well above the 60,916 max pressure.

Any thoughts?

First of all...how far are you planning on shooting?

300s are nice, but they're spendier and they thump more.

Also, you'll not get them much over 2750-2800 fps, I'll be willing to bet.

Get some 250s and load them up around 2900-2950 fps and that's all you'll need to a mile.

The Finn army snipers are making 2000m hits with the 250s, FWIW.

A buddy of mine that knows George of GA Precision says that George told him that 88.2 Reloader 25, Federal 210 Match primers, 300 grain smk's with lapua brass and an coal of 3.600 was what he shoots in the mile competitions. I have a GAP crusader and got a recipe straight from George himself. The dude knows what he's talkin about!

Yes, dont rely on quickloads. Go out and work up loads for you rifle and see what works.

I use H-4831sc for my 250 loads. It's actually something I bought in an 8# jug. I'd imagine it's a bit too fast for the 300s.

Retumbo, US 869, RL-25, VV-170, VV N-570, H-1000 and some of the other magnum hunting powders for the 338 RUM, 338/378, 338LM type giants, should be sufficient.

Re: Just bought a .338 Lapua Police Need Recipes!!!

I'd suggest starting at 88grains of H1000 with 300SMK, it's safe. Use Federal 215M primers, work your way up to 92grains in 1/2 grain increments, look for accuracy and high pressure signs. Also make "twin" loads, 2 of each powder charge weight.

You cannot go with what works in others rifles as far as powder weights, I don't care WHO gives you the load data. There are too many mechanical/atmospheric variables that can make one rifle's load "golden", yet in another rifle in another environment that "golden" load will give high pressure signs.

From my research(as well as others) and firsthand experience, the 338LM does like a jump to the lands... I started off with .020 and .010 and have 1-hole group nodes @ 100 yds.

So far i've only done brass fire-forming and pressure load tests, 100 yds. is too close to give good ladder test results and +300 yds. is in order for next go around.
