Got out to the range with the new stick. A individual and his son occupied the lane next to me, and as I began to get setup I overheard the man explaining to his son how to boresight a rifle/scope. I was amazed at what he was teaching, he knew nothing about rifles or weapons of any kind, let alone how to boresight. So was just curious what you all use as your bore sight procedures. Merry Christmas everybody, and to those deployed happy holidays from home, and stay safe.

Re: Just curious about your boresighting procedures?

I set up my rifle and scope on a table outside and get someone to go about 50 yards downrange and angle a mirror so the light shines perfectly through the barrel. Adjust scope and your on paper! It works amazingly good for how simple it really is.

I just find a spot around 100 yds. or so,set the rifle on a bench.Pull the bolt out of the rifle, find the spot through the barrel, and carefully adjust the scope without moving the rifle until the spot is centered on the crosshair.Very simple, and will get you on paper,so you can make final adjustments after firing.BTW,I got this idea from Nightforce.

Re: Just curious about your boresighting procedures?

Last time I did this, I set up a target at 25 yards, removed the bolt, caused the barrel to point at the center of the target, then caused the scope to point at the center of the target. I fired, it hit.

Then I replaced the target at 100 yards, was 4" high, dialed this back out and was done. Set knobs to zero here.

That's pretty much the way I've done it for years. With the rifle on a bipod and bags it's pretty easy to adjust. I don't remember the las time I wasn't on paper with the first shot at 100. It works the same with AR15s, but after you take out the bolt carrier group close the rear pin so it will hold the receivers apart.

Re: Just curious about your boresighting procedures?

Use a $39 laser boresighter that goes into the muzzle. The 1st shot will get on paper easily at 100 yds. I will then aim the rifle back at the bull and without moving the rifle adjust the reticle to the hole in the paper. Done other than tweaking.

Greatest thing since the Centerfold!

Allows for easy sighting in for bores you can't see through such as lever guns, semi autos.

Re: Just curious about your boresighting procedures?

Pull bolt, look through bore on a target, adjust scope cross hairs to match what your looking at through the bore. Never been more the 6-10" off. It's really that easy.

Re: Just curious about your boresighting procedures?

i did my howa .223 at night with a flashlight on a fence post 100ish yds away looking out the backdoor of the garage...

because it was just a small white light, it was really great for lining up in the bore then in the scope...

3 shots the next day and it was zeroed...

just dont forget some kind of barrel run in procedure for new rifles....if you believe in it, that is...

cheers jimi

Re: Just curious about your boresighting procedures?

I bore-sight using a neighbor's house that is about 100 yards away.
I get a house feature centered in bore, then I adjust cross hairs to that feature.
Fire one round at a 200 yard high-power target, and then (with reticle centered on the X and no bumping the rifle) adjust the reticle to center the spotter.
If you bump the rifle while doing this you have to re-set your turrets and adjust again.
Then, if it's not windy, fire a five round group and set your turrets.
One shot zero, five shots confirmation.
6 rounds and you can be very confidant in your zero.

A 200 yard zero procedure gets my rifle mapped for any range without having to worry about scope height above bore.

I've had my ballistic map off by as much as 3 moa using a 100 yard zero procedure.
