Just retired (Police) and want a few toys. I would like to shoot some long distance and was at my LGS today, and was suggested the following......

Savage 10 FCP .308 McMillan 26" Heavy
Bushnell Elite 4200

Opinions?

Thanks

Re: Just getting started

Good suggestion for a rifle and scope

What kind of distances are you looking to shoot? Will you be carrying the rifle around in the mountains or just shooting at the range? What's your budget? Have you considered the cost of a scope yet? Do you have any sort of precision marksman training or will this be your first dive into the precision shooting arena?

Re: Just getting started

Not a bad way to go.
The McMillan stock on the savage either does not have pillars or only has one.
I would prefer two, as the more times you remove the action from the stock, the more times you compress the fiberglass, causing wear and eventually too much protrusion by your stock screws.

I really like the stock, it is very well made.
The HS precision version will run you about 200 less, it is a very good stock with full length aluminum bedding block.

Don't know what type of shooting you plan on doing, the 4200 series of scopes are very good. If you are going to be paper punching on a known distance range, it will serve you just fine.

I really suggest looking online at scopes, as most fun shops have hunting or "tacti-cool" scopes.

The type of shooting you are going to do will drive your scope choice.

No training....diving in! 2K budget to start. Range shooting only. Not a hunter.

Re: Just getting started

Good combo to start. What I have on my 308. Good barrel life and reasonable ammo prices, allowing for lots of practice. Lots of useful information here and most people at the ranges are friendly and will usually let you try their set up. Used guns, scopes and other items at reasonable prices in For Sale section here. Have fun and good shooting.

Re: Just getting started

are you going to be changing the stock or cutting the barrel down any? if so then i would go with the model 10 FP-SR. its half the price so you have more money for a stock, glass, bipods. the McMillan has 1 pillar in the back instead of 2 like some pillar bedded stocks have. saw one at the range a few weeks ago that was really nice but he hand a bit of work done to his (cut barrel to 20 inches and bedded the stock).

going with the cheaper model 10 will let you get better glass and then you can just save a bit and shop around a bit for a stock you like.

congrats on your retirement

EDIT: The FP-SR has a 22 inch barrel as well so no need to cut it down if you wanted 22.
