Just picked up my rem 700 5r from the post office, now I noticed when I opened the box the bolt was already in and the packaging wasn't the styrofoam in most relighting but just had a few prices if soft rubber stuff, is this normal? Also do they shoot these at the manufacture? Because mine has some black fowling in the barrel like it was shot. Thirdly my barrel seems to have a bigger gap between it and the stock on one side then the other like almost doubled. God i hope I didn't get ripped off this was suppose to be new from a dealer. And not a lemon but with my luck I'm sure it is.

Re: Just got my 700 5r three quick questions!!

None of the ones that I have seen recently had rubber as packaging. It was all styrofoam. I am not sure if Remington shoots there rifles prior to them leaving the factory or not. My intuition says that they do not. I know Weatherby does and they produce a target with it. The difference in the gap between the stock and barrel may be normal. I have seen some differences like that, but this can be taken care of with a bedding job.

I hope you didn't get screwed, but you may want to contact the dealer and see what they have to say.

Re: Just got my 700 5r three quick questions!!

I bought mine 4 yrs ago. The cl of the barrel channel did not match up with the cl of the barrel. My recommendation - take it out and shoot it - I'll bet you'll like it. 175SMK, 42-43 gr of Varget at 2.8 COAL and go to it.

At some point, I had the barrel-action out and evened up the barrel channel, NBD ...

Re: Just got my 700 5r three quick questions!!

When I went through the Remington 700 armorers school in December the instructor told me they shoot the rifle, as my 5r also had black fouling, I asked about the barrel not being centered and they said that it doesnt matter it is just cosmetic. HS and Remington consider it in "spec" as long as it is free floated. You will love her shes an awesome shooting rifle.

Oh and as far as the box, the only thing on it that said Remington was the stock number tag on the end, the rest was plain brown.

Re: Just got my 700 5r three quick questions!!

When I got mine two years ago it came in a Remington box with Rem 700 5R on the label and neatly packaged styrofoam. It had been fired at the factory and had a minimum fouling. I bet with a little research or a phone call to Remington you could find a way to run the serial number to be sure you have the real thing. They are sweet rifles.

Re: Just got my 700 5r three quick questions!!

Mine came in a box with 'Remington' written in green along the top. The end had a white label with model number and bar code. Rifle had the bolt in and three pieces of Styrofoam: Crown protector, barrel support, and butt end cover. Also a hex wrench for the trigger and a manual.

Here are some pics, they look familiar? Mine also only has a remington sticker on the end flap stating its a ss specail 5r mil spec, also what about your bolt was it in the chamber? I know most Remingtons come with the bolt not in the rifle already.

That's about identical I would say. Seeing the picture, I believe mine had the cardboard at muzzle as well. Bolt was in mine. I remember clearly because the knob had torn up the box a bit and I was concerned. Everything worked out though. Its a great rifle and I'm happy I chose it.

Re: Just got my 700 5r three quick questions!!

Packaging is exactly the same as mine was. The only thing that said Remington was the white/yellow tag on the end of one side that had the information for the rifle on it.

The bolt was in the rifle and there was a little bit of fouling in the barrel as well. Mine was brand new from a vendor and I know mine was not played around with; this seems fairly common.

I replaced my stock with a HS Precision M24 stock but I also had a stock channel issue.

I think you're fine.
