I have been shooting since I was around 10 years old and now I am 21 and want to get serious about it. I picked up a Remington 700 R-5 .308 today and plan on putting a Nightforce NSX 5.5-22x50. Now is where the questions start, I am planning on using the rifle for long range target shooting at around 600-700yrds. I know it depends on what my gun likes but what would everyone recommend for a factory cartridge for this purpose? I am also going to start reloading and want to know what Bullet, powder, brass, and primer you would recommend. Also what grains for powder and billet would be best?

Thank you!! all comments are more than welcome!

Re: Just starting out! Need Advise!

load data you get for your own rifle everything is just a guidline.

factory 118LR, FGMM, etc are the yardstick of the business.

work up the 175 or the 155 and you will be golden to 1k and beyond.

I have also moved this to "relaoding" in that would appear to be the right home.

get some load books and begin your education.

I plan on reading as many load books as possible, also the rifle has never been shot and I want to break the barrel in properly any suggestions. I have always shot hunting rifles and assault rifles never anything i was hoping to get sub m.o.a performance out of.

i would recommend you read a few reloading books and get a starting kit. It did few run throughs with the kit before i reloaded my first rounds.

Barrel break is a gimmick to sell more barrels, the only reloading manual I recommend is Lyman, they only sell reloading equipment, everybody else sells components, also the stickies on the top of this sub forum are a must read
