Outstanding! How do you feel the PVS-30 compares to the larger SIMRAD as far as image goes? I've loved watching Pitch Black Precision's youtube videos, didn't realize you guys had a fb page.

the 30 and simrad don't differ much in image. its more about the aesthetics and form factor of the 30 over the simrad.
Hello all! Just ordered mine a couple days ago from USNV from Steve. Great transaction and a good knowledgeable staff. What is everyone seeing on turn around time from ordering to arriving on the doorstep? And forgive my ignorance.....can someone explain the FOM rating? Thanks again
Fom is figure of merit and is a way the army or someone came up to rate tubes of the same generation against each other, roughly. Multiply the snr by resolution.
Someone needs to have a Black Friday sale on PVS-30s, I'm waffling back and forth between that and a SIMRAD. Not holding my breath, but a guy can dream!

Cake5150, i see you have been on the fence for a while on this. As a LWTS owner and a 30 owner go for it! get a PEQ 15 or such for those dark nights and don't look back!

Yes and yes. If you're going to be scanning much you're better off with something dedicated however like a PVS-14 or a thermal monocular or both.
I'm looking to get into hunting at night. The idea would be to use a cheap thermal scanner to find targets, and then use the PVS 30 to do the actual shooting. But I have also looked at getting a PVS 14 monocular instead of a PVS 30.
I want to buy one in the worst way, for me it is coming down to cost/weight vs. benefit compared to what I am currently using (PVS-14 behind day optic). I have gotten quite proficient with shooting steel at night w/ my NightCap mounted PVS-14 behind my PST gen 1 2.5-10x32, BUT I would prefer to be able to reach out further than that currently gets me. The smallish 32mm objective lens on the day scope seems like a limiting factor here but I know the whole 14 behind day scope is not an ideal setup in the first place (I've been using that sort of setup on and off for ~11 years). I've got a new PST gen 2 3-15x44 coming in next week which I will be testing w/ NV immediately to see if I really will need to buy a PVS-30 or a SIMRAD. I really don't mind spending the money but the improvement needs to be pretty extreme to justify the cost and, more importantly, the addition of 3 lb onto the end of my rifle. I moved out of Florida permanently back in August so I don't have anything (hogs) to hunt w/ my LWTS anymore, sort of sad. Unfortunately thermal is really not intended for simply shooting steel plates at extended range which is what I find myself doing nowadays. The wise thing to do would be to sell my LWTS, but letting go of that precious gem might be more than I am able to stomach haha!!

I sold one last week that was low 1900. It was a random grab the guy got it and that’s what it was. I never know what they are going to send me. We tried to make a deal with them and get just high FOM units for a premium price and got shut down. We were basically told to deal with what we get lol

You don't want to buy anything "cheap" when it comes to NV or thermal, you really do get what you pay for and any cheap thermal isn't going to have very much of a detection distance. At minimum I would recommend one of the FLIR Scout 640's.
A PVS-14 to PVS-30 are two entirely different animals. A PVS-14 works well in conjunction with a rifle that has a zerod IR laser for shorter distances while a PVS-30 works well for mounting with a day optic (as intended). IMO the ideal setup is a PVS-14, a thermal monocular, and a NV clip on. If I was only going to have one or needed to decide what to buy first it would be the clip on.
If you want to save some cash on one purchase or another I would suggest a Simrad KN203. The only downside I have found to it vs a PVS-30 is you have to buy mounts but you can buy a hell of a lot of mounts for the $3000+ cost different of a PVS-30. If one of those interests you I've got a few blem units that I'm letting go for $1600 shipped as a black friday deal. TNVC has the FLIR Scout 640's on sale for $2800 which would get you into two units for less than a PVS-30.
The glass quality of the PST's are going to be more of a hold up behind a clip on than the objective size. Also if you're only shooting steel with them you're most likely going to be prone and you'll never notice the weight of a clip on anyway. You really can't go wrong with either unit it just comes down to whether or not you want to pay the cost difference to get the unit that mounts down in line with the optic therefor is a bit less bulky on the gun and will mount to anything that already has a forend rail. A clip on works way better than a PVS-14 behind the optic if you've never used one to compare.
I have used my '30 with a 1-8X26 Short Dot and it worked better than I would have expected. Even with low mag in the 2-3X range. While it works better with larger objectives it was still very functional
With that said, I have been disappointed when mounting my '30 in front of other's mid grade glass, the image becomes dark in a hurry with midgrade glass. FFP is a very nice thing is a day optic as well.

Thanks for the feedback, what sort of mid-grade glass did you try with it that had disappointing results?
I've ran my 30 in front of a Leopold MK 4 5X25 and it was OK..... Useable but you are not getting the full experience.
The only other glass I've used is a couple of S&B a 5 X 25 and a Ultra short 5 X 20 both great
Night Assassin, When putting the PVS 30 and the 5 X 20 Ultra short together how far up mag scale could you take it?
You can go well into the upper teens, but you don't need to. It's hard to explain the difference at night, maybe everything has more dimension so you don't need as much magnification at night. I rarely find my sweet spot above 12X while shooting, even lower during observation.
It's very basic . On Off Gain knob is the same and then the focus. Don't turn on in daylight!!

I have to agree with Night Assassin, the S&B 5-25 is awesome with the PVS-30. The Lupey MK6 3-18 also works well with it.
