Ok so I bought a used Kestrel on here a few weeks ago and the instructions were not included. So I went googling. From what I've read, you simply take take the most accurate altitude reading in your present position, or a Barometric Pressure reading. Then input that into the Kestrel.
Now, when you have one reading, lets say altitude, do you simply leave the other alone and hit the sync "on " option? Or do I have to calibrate that as well.
Also, the #'s weren't making any sense so I went to settings and input my correct altitude and local barometric readings in the " set up mode".
Now everything seems to be reading accurate but is there anything I'm missing ??

It sounds like you basically got it. I think there are instructions on the Kestrel website -

http://www.nkhome.com/pdfs/K4500_Instructions_7.28.10_WEB.pdf

However, if you're going to use it for long range shooting application, most people set it up to read absolute, (station), pressure, and not deal with the altitude. For long range shooting, we're really looking for Density Altitude which lumps together Pressure, Altitude, and Temperature.

That's what I was trying to calibrate it for. The DA. It seems to be working now. If its not DEAD NUTS its certainly close. I appreciate the response.

The Kestrel AB uses station pressure to calculate DA regardless of whether you adjust the altimeter or barometer. To check if the 4000 does the same thing, check the DA using the altitude set to zero and then to an altitude a couple of thousand feet higher and see if the DA stays the same.

I have the 4000 so do as Ziahunter said,,,,,,Set the REF ALT in the Baro screen to Zero and UN SYNC it from the ALT

BUT If you want to use the ALT screen then do the Above but ENTER the current air pressure into the ALT screens REF BARO Screen and that should work Ok,

But Sooters WONT Use this Feature as We use Station Pressure / Absolute Pressure NOT Adjusted Pressure.
