In looking at a thread about cheek risers, I found a boardmember who does this mod to non-adjustable stocks. He is stockdoc from CA. After a couple of PMs I decided to send my McMillan A5, with the moulded in GAP camo, to him to see what he could do. I have this on my Manners T4-A, and I really like it, so I wanted it on the A5.
I have to say that Joe did a great job. He quoted me $175.00 if he supplied the KMW hardware, $125.00 If I supplied the hardware. I let him supply it. Turnaround time was just over two weeks for mine, and that was over the Thanksgiving holiday. Not a cheap mod, but it isn't cheap when you order it factory either. He did nice clean work, in a reasonable time frame, for an exceptable price. I recomend Joe if you are interested in doing this. Now the pics of course.

Re: KMW Loggerhead Cheek Rest Mod

Is this Joe D***s? If so, my McM A4 has the pre-loggerhead system in it, where the screws bear down directly on the rods, rather than clamp the block around the rods.

Regardless, the execution of the installation and it's function are perfect. Nice fella to chat with, too.

Something else to think about - Joe will also carve out a notch in the front of your cheekpiece that will allow the bolt to be removed without messing with the cheekpiece. I'm a big fan of this.

I wish I knew that when he had it, oh well...

Greg, I can do that for ya if you send it back to me, just cost ya the shipping back n forth. </div></div>

I really appreciate the offer, but I'm good. I would have done it, but it isn't any big deal now that it is done, and the rifle is back together.
But thanks, that is very good of you.
Guys deal with confidence, stockdoc is GTG.

No offense to the crafsman here, but I'm pretty sure thats because those are 'before' and 'after' pics. Look closely at the last one - you can see some difference (chipping) in the paint on the leading edge of the cheekpiece. Still very good work, though!

Re: KMW Loggerhead Cheek Rest Mod

Well, he has to cut the thing fer chrissakes. Paint MIGHT chip. Hell, touch it up. I have one of his jobs on my HS. LOVE IT! Best mod I've done to my stick. Whaddya know, no more neck cramps after a 50 round match! Joe does good work and is GTG. I will vouch for him till the cows come home.

They are indeed before and after shots. With the cheek piece all the way down, there is a clean 1/8" gap on the front down angle, and the bottom. The rear down angle sits tight, and the top line of the stock is dead on.
I hope this is helpfull.

Re: KMW Loggerhead Cheek Rest Mod

No offense taken on the feedback. I tape the stocks before cutting but sometimes (especially McMillan's) the edges along the cut chip in places. This is something I address during finish work and if it's your basic cammo paints (OD green, tan, flat black) I touch it up so it is not noticeable. Sometimes the paint doesn't quite match so you can tell the difference. This is much like auto body worn and is best done BEFORE any fancy duracoat, or complex camouflage paint jobs. I'm always improving my techniques and appreciate feedback good or bad. No better way to improve.

Keep your eyes open for a Shehane tracker laminated wood stock I'm about to finish. The finish on this stock is crazy glossy. I was very nervous when I first got it so I called the customer and he said he understood what I had to do. So it's already cut and milled. All I have to do is glue in the guts and finish work. Hopefully the customer will post some nice pics!

Thanks for all the kind words guys.
