I've been looking around at aftermarket barrels. Trying to decide between L3i and the Lilja barrels. I won't be shooting match grade ammo all the time. From a little searching, it's been said the L3i barrels aren't as picky about ammo as the Lilja barrels. Does this sound about right or, was I reading misinformation? Also, will either one or both fit the standard Varmint factory stock with a little work? Thanks!

It’s not much work to fit the l3i in a stock if you’re handy with sandpaper and a 30mm pipe. It’s really all about balance, if you’re thinking about trying some prs go for the l3i. The fat barrel weighs 7lbs and looks great too.

That’s really nice. I didn’t think those would fit the MTR stock without removing a lot of wood.

I think I’m going to have to get me one of those front rests, that looks old school rustic. 🤣

The only tricky part is right in front of the action. The barrel sits below the action flat and you need to be careful to preserve the step up, or you can just go ham and pillar bed it afterwards. Markdorman did a nice write up on it somewhere on here.

For that spot in front of the front action screw, you can take a look at the underside of the action and get an idea of how much you have to play with. I’m guessing it is about 1/10” or so. On the stock, I would put a piece of painters tape that same measurement in front of the front pillar and be careful to not get into that area while sanding. It should be a small step at that point to just clear the barrel from contacting the stock. I’ll try to take a picture later to show what I mean.

I have both and don't think either is any more fussy than the other when it comes to ammo varieties. Every rimfire barrel regardless of manufacturer will show a preference for a particular brand/lot. Can't go wrong with either. For a PRS rig the L3i easily gives you the weight balance advantage, for a bench or ARA build I'd go with the Lilja...a few more barrel length options and the .900 diameter responds well to a barrel tuner. Either can be headspaced to any spec you choose so both can be "tuned" for any brand of ammo you choose. My Lilja outshoots the L3i in 50/100 yd benchrest, the extra weight forward balance with the L3i considerably reduces wobble zone, making it more accurate off of props.
