Lafayette's Build

Re: Lafayette's Build

Sir. you have really jumped in the fire with both feet if this is your first rifle. Unless you are independently wealthy, you will struggle to advance your skill level at a very high rate, with the cost per round of the lapua.
Most guys start on the 308 but good luck with your endevors.

Re: Lafayette's Build

I agree with Jon ^^^ im new to the forums but ive been around guns for awhile now. I love the .338 lapua and look forward to purchasing one eventually, but until then ill stick with my .243 and .308 good luck with ur 5-6 dollars a round though =]

Re: Lafayette's Build

I agree - I wasn't looking for a .338, i just happened to find a great deal on one. While this is my first rifle, it is not my first time shooting a bolt action or a Remington 700. While in the army i had the opportunity to shoot an M24 on several occasions, and i got hooked.

I may build a lower caliber rifle, to share and teach my younger brother. This would help me keep the price of ammo down and allow him to accompany me to the range.

I certainly understand your concern and would not recommend the .338 to a beginner shooter, i may even have difficulty with it but only time will tell.

In principle i like to buy once and buy right, hopefully it wasn't a mistake.

Re: Lafayette's Build

sounds like u have a good head on ur shoulders, and yes an m24 will def get u hooked. im just crabby becuase i want an Accuracy Intl. .338 and cant afford to spend 8 grand on 1 gun lol

Re: Lafayette's Build

Im all about AI, would love the AE/AW but i think ill settle for the MLR in an AICS.

Heres the new stick - sellers pic, should have it in about a week.

Re: Lafayette's Build

I have a set of harris bipods off my m4 - theyre the 9-13's and the first thing im going to do is test how those feel.. If i like'em ill keepem if not im going with the Harris BR's

Im heavy in the optics search, i have coworker with a Bushnell 4200 that id like to get my hands on just to see how it feels, otherwise im going with what i know and bookin a Leopold MK4.

Im looking for a base and set of rings now.. and recomendations for a base?

Re: Lafayette's Build

personally i would just go with the mk4 scope base, but if u want to do long range stuff, then make sure u have the 20 MOA base. btw make sure u also order the one for your .338 as the .338 and the .308 700p have different base screw pattern

Re: Lafayette's Build

Seekins for base and rings.

They are very well made products.

I will echo an earlier sentiment however. Unless you are already an accomplished rifleman (meaning you have ingrained skills) that .338LM is going to cause you problems. Since you are dead set on it, I would at least suggest a LOT of time on a .22LR trainer.

Re: Lafayette's Build

Thank you for the concern. I think ill be ok. If not i can only say I went too big, no shame in that... But im confident in my skills with a rifle and with my ability to step up.

The Seekins stuff looks great.

Re: Lafayette's Build

Wanted to post some info/specs up on the rifle...

The 700P in .338 Lapua features a composite stocks reinforced with Du Pont Kevlar and fiberglass. The stock is laid up around an aircraft-grade aluminum bedding block that runs up the entire length of the receiver. It has a textured, black, non-reflective finish and comes with sling swivel studs.

NOTE: This is the NEW IMPROVED version. Not the older version (MLR) with barrel issues.

Specifications

.338 Lapua
26" Barrel with 1:10 Twist (I think the older MLR was 1:12)
Custom Shop Trigger set below 4.0 pounds (I think the 700p has external adjustable trigger, 40x - vs. the older model with the xmark pro)
HS PRecision Stock w/aluminum chassis
3/4 Inch Recoil Pad
3 Sling Swivel Studs
Badger Ordnance TYPE Floorplate & Detachable magazine (Remington Copy)
Muzzle Brake
Long Action Receiver fits standard Long Action M1913 Rail systems

(Info off of snipercountry)

Re: Lafayette's Build

Ok guys, while waiting for my rifle to arrive in the mail. I have narrowed the scope on the optics ill be looking to mount.

Im looking for feedback here..

Vortex Viper PST 6-24 EBR-1 MOA

or

Bushnell 4200 6-24 Mildot / Tac Mil

Theres about a 150$ price difference however I feel that these are comporable scopes. Please advise.

Re: Lafayette's Build

After reading through countless threads on the Hide, SC, Optics Talk and other forums regarding Vortex and the soon to be released PST I have decided to pass.

Having read all the threads did not make my decision easy. I am very confident in Vortex's product line and would have loved to purchase a PST but as far as I can tell there is no definitive date for their release, other than they (Vortex) hope to get the PST's out before the end of the year.

Thats a shame, Im not pointing fingers and dont want to have the Vortex conversation unfold here - im just sorry that I wont have the opportunity to mount one on my new rig, although who knows I may in the future..

Since this is my first bolt gun, and first MLR, LR optic I am itching to get out on to the range - time will tell if my over zealousness has lead me astray from a great optic, i.e the PST. I can only say that I will be very upset if/when I buy the 4200 and Vortex announces a week later that they are shipping PST's

Im confident that I will be happy with the Bushnell however, I am now left with deciding whether to pay up for the illumination and FFP. I think I will go with both, and probably a medium height ring set and a 15/20 MOA base - Seekins or Near most likely.

Re: Lafayette's Build

+1 on the 22 trainer it will definitley help to hone your shooting skills. I bought a 22 first before building my rifle. I read many posts on here regarding that fact.I have to say it was the best thing I ever did for myself to get the principles of marksmanship ingrained into me.

Re: Lafayette's Build

Lafayette, grats on the rifle its a nice one

Fan of True Blood?

My recomendation to you is to learn how to handload. It will reduce the cost of feeding your rifle significantly. Learn learn learn and learn some more and then get into some efficient handloading and sorting out some ladder testing to work out a good load with as little trigger pulls as possible. I can help you with this if you need.

If you dont handload, at least keep the brass you use as you may change your mind latter.

Also +1 on the Bushnell 4200 ELITE with tactical turrets. Make sure you get a good base and decent rings too.

Id be putting a brake on the thing, especially if its your first large calibre.

Re: Lafayette's Build

Thanks Vman! I agree on the muzzle break and reloading, they will be in the future plans for sure. I have a few things I need to cover before then though..

Before that I wanted to give an update on the build.. I will try and post pictures as soon as possible – but really there isn’t much to post because I’m waiting for shipments to arrive…

First and foremost I received the rifle a few days ago and am happy to report that it was received in perfect, as described condition. At least as far as I can tell. I am very happy with the fit of the stock and the adjustable trigger pull, the trigger feels great! Really crisp, even break at what feels like only a few pounds.

Anyway – as far as the optic goes I was dead set on the Bushnell 4200 but the final price plus shipping stalled me. I was hoping to get a wholesale price on the scope with the help of a friend, but things didn’t exactly work out when I received a PM from a fellow Hide member – offering me his optic at (what I hold to be) a reasonable price.

I bought a used Leupold L/RT 6.5-20 TMR reticule with M1 turrets which have 1/4MOA increments; I chose this optic over the Bushnell for a few reasons.

1. I was concerned about Bushnell customer service
2. I was concerned about the limited elevation of the 4200
3. I believe Leupold has better glass
4. I like the TMR reticule (with half mil hashes)
5. The price difference, while not insignificant was IMO justified – don’t forget I bought a used Leupold as appose to a new 4200. I could have waited to find a used 4200 but my concerns about Bushnell’s customer service (repair if need be) and my impatientness to mount an optic derailed that option.

As the project stands I have the basics covered as far as equipment. I am now looking for a cleaning / barrel wear kit and the base / ring setup to mount the Leupy.

As far as the optic mounting hardware is concerned – I’m looking for a 20MOA base and a nice set of rings.

For the base I’m looking at Near, Seekins and Badger Ordinance

The rings are still undecided but I like the Leupold quick release rings (QRW) thus far.

The cleaning kit will most likely be comprised of the following items, again I’m no expert but have followed the advice of many on the development of this list – if anything seems out of place please chim in.

1. Dewey Rod / Jig
2. Copper brushes
3. Bore guide (Possum Hollow)
4. Patches
5. JB Bore Paste
6. Butches Bore Shine
7. A general gun oil (Lubricant) and some Locktite

Thanks again guys for the help.

Lafayette

Re: Lafayette's Build

Hope you like the Leupold.

The bushnell service isnt actually bad, nor is the glass... But il leave that topic for another time

JB bore paste can be pretty harsh so just be really carefull with it.

Theres a guy named Mike Lucas that makes really nice custom bore guides for the 700s. Tell him your calibre, barrel length and the rod you intend to use and he will make you the best remington 700 bore guide that money can buy.

Re: Lafayette's Build

Nice.

You're braver than I am. I'd prefer to have that thing loaded up on a good bipod than just resting on a sandbag....but I'd still probably puss out anyway

It'd be punishing without a brake after 10-20 rounds.

Try 5rd groups, if you're going to post group pics. That way, you may avoid the ire of the site commandant...
