Lake Mead Updates

They keep finding barrels with remains in them. Guess them Vegas gangsters never anticipated the lake was going to dry up!

Decades ago, in wetter times we were working on the top of the Dam. Shift was 8pm to 4 am. Not a lot happens but there are still a few vehicles that drive across. As we're watching, a car came hauling ass down the road from the Nevada side with a cop car screaming a couple hundred yards behind. Halfway across this car screeches to a halt in the middle of the road, the door opens and the driver bails out and jumps off the side of the Dam to kill himself (cops told us later).

But he screwed up and jumped off the lake side and the water level was about 10 feet down. Took the cops about half hour to fish him out. Silly bastard almost drowned.

Thank you,
MrSmith

He went left when he should have gone right.

It’s been a long time since I drove across that damn…..dam

The water district in Las Vegas has bought cattle ranches in North NV just for the water rights. They may pump it dry like Los Angeles did to Owen's Valley.

Edit: Lake Mead is the largest man made reservoir in the US. Maybe not for long.

CA needs a other 100 desal plants like the one in Carlsbad. https://www.carlsbaddesal.com/

The Salton Sea was formed when a CO river aqueduct broke through and dumped water there in 1905. It would have already dried up, but it is basically a saline toxic farm runoff dump at this point.

funny, I got stuck watching his videos the other night. Thats nuts.

coincidense this is all happening now with how everything else is going? gas prices, inflation, supply chain shortages, food shortages, water shortages. I dont belive in coincidences. crisis after crisis to usher in a new day.

The Bible I read kinda made end of days sound kinda shitty. Can we shit or get off the pot already?

I was a water engineer for about 10 years. The best I ever hear it put was “No one in the country is running out of water. In some places, they are running out of cheap water.”

Things like desalination are likely the answer. It’s just that up till now, there hasn’t been enough reason to pay for it.
California was given 2 Federal grants since about 2000 IIRC . T stole and pissed the money away . Funny about 3 years ago IIRC the state put up millions for a Desalination Plant study . Code for my Bro InLaw needs some cash .
California is a failed State .
I suggest that we start referring to it as such . You know like Libya .

Desalinization take a lot of power, which they don't have... I guess for the same reason they don't have reservoirs or desalinization plants. :D

I was going to say they need a time machine to go back to the 70's to fix this issue. But then they could just go back to the late 20's and 30's and keep the earliest socialists from traveling west.

And on the other side of this failed state.

Like it or not, desalination is the answer. Build a nuclear power plant right next to it. Two birds...

Stupid is as stupid does.

California . An abundance of greed and the black hole of intelligence . What could possibly go wrong ?

Maybe ol Jon Wesley Powell was onto something

Ha! That was a good one!

When was the last time we built a nuclear power plant in this country, let alone CA? We've actually been decommissioning them like crazy.

2016 in Tennessee.
You mean the Watts Bar plant in TN? They built a second reactor. The first went operational in 1996. Keep in mind that construction on that plant started in 1973.

Single reactor plants are not currently economical to run.

Yes. Second reactor took 43 years to build. According to the internet search i did. Lol

This only makes sense, being next to a massive ocean. I have a better idea, CA should be broken away from the US and sank in said ocean.
I went to Ca a week ago, took two days to get there from Idaho. Spent two hellishly hot days there and then left. Place is such a shithole, went straight to SLC and felt much more relaxed as soon as I crossed the border on the 80E into Nevada. Born and raised in Ca but boy has it really changed for the worse since I'd say 2015ish.

Fuck em.

Vegas is a dirty shitty place. Why they would want to concentrate millions of people in a desert with very little water is mind blowing, but then they rely on millions more visiting to fuel their economy.

Then anyone letting California just pull whatever they want without thinking it's going to go to shit is crazy.

I'm still on the damn almond thing. Gallon of water for everyone of those little bastards is nuts. Grow them in Florida and dry the place up a little.

My earth science professor said pretty much the same. There is no shortage of water. We're just using it faster than nature can return it to the aquifers, but we have the same amount we started with.

It’s too bad you couldn’t co locate desalination plants with any of PG&E’s nuclear power plants and use all of that free waste heat to make potable water…

The main problem in CA is that developers keep putting up new cities/towns in a desert, which consume huge amounts of water. Also corporate farmers use a lot of water, which is heavily subsidized. 100,000 of almond and other trees here, lots of nuts shipped to China.

So effectively we are using limited water to feed China, so a few farmers get rich. I suspect that those farmers are mostly employees of big agribusiness, and the farmers themselves are not getting rich.
