I am going to give the lapua 155gr scenar a try in my 16" ar10. Is anyone else running them in a 16" AR? Do you mind sharing your load and velocity if you have that?

I'm looking for what others are using for loads so I know roughly what to have in mind as far as load development. I will be using win wlr primers, varget powder, and LC LR brass as I have a ton of that on hand.

Re: Lapua 155gr scenar loads?

I am just beginning to play with the 155s myself. I asked around last week for general tips about the bullet and one thing that several folks offered was the need to get velocities up to 2850+ for best results. That may or may not be feasible in your gun.

Here is that other thread.

Caution, you might run into loads such as (47.8 gr Varget, 155 scenar, win cases,...). These are BOLT gun only loads.

The AR mechanism needs to have its load developed around a certain barrel pressure as the bullet passes the gas port. Too little pressure and the action does not cycle, too much and the action wear at a high rate. Just right and the action will toss the brass at 90 degrees to the barrel direction.

Thanks for the link to your thread. I have been finding that they like to be going in the 2800-3000fps range, but I am going to give them a try in my short barrel.

I am having good results with the 175/178gr loads I am shooting now, but running some numbers in jbm the 155's look like solid shooters.

Re: Lapua 155gr scenar loads?

Got out this weekend to load develop the 155's in my rifle and work on some positional changes I have been working on. I have to say I am really excited with the results on both items. As you can see in one of my groups, I still have a trigger issue present I am working on correcting, but I have come along ways.

Anyway, on to the 155's. I started my loads over 43gr of varget and worked up to 45 grs, the max I felt comfortable shooting at this time. Results hovered around 1.5-2 moa for all powder charges except for 2, 44 gr and 44.5 grs. All load testing was done at 200yds.

44grs- Velocity was right around 2575fps for these 5 rounds. I know this is only 5 rounds, but I am thinking this load has potential at this charge.

44.5grs- running basically 2600fps. 4 rounds grouped under 1moa and I pulled the fifth. I was focusing more on follow through than a steady squeeze and you see the results.

Anyway, I am very pleased with my initial groups and I plan to pursue the 44gr load. My question is to those of you with 155gr scenar experience, but at my velocity what are the chances I will see the sub moa performance out to 800yds or so?

I wish I would have been at 2700fps or so, but there is no way with my short barrel gasser.

Savage 10
IVI69 and IVI70 brass
CCI BR2
50gr Varget (highly compressed)
2.815 COAL
2995 fps

Please...PLEASE use caution. Safe in my rifle, but might break your rifle or face.

Re: Lapua 155gr scenar loads?

I know your using Varget, But I have had very good results with H4895 in the Shorter barrels, I don't have my notes, but I know the charge was 45.5 of H4895. In the Bolt gun 47.1 of N150 worked the best.
