Sweden is not really having a laugh and they are far from done, first of they have 10x the death tool of their neighbors and second they have a 40% larger drop in GDP than the neighbors.
One thing folks touting Sweden omit is that oh yes they don't have mandatory masks and lockdowns but they are far from doing business as usual. most of them worked 3 days per week on 6h/day schedules if not working from home for months, so the economic impact was larger than comparable neighboring countries that had lockdown Norway or Finland and they have about 10x as many dead so there is really nothing much to show for. The only reason they don't have a secondary spike yet is they didi not vacation much abroad nor did Tourists flock to Sweden.

ok - please, tell me, where you do you get your information from? The Smithsonian I believe has been fully uploaded online. I learnt a lot about shooting, reloading and firearms online. I learnt how to become very proficient at archery, field dressing game and planning and executing a solo hunt in the backcountry online. Most of the content and more, of what's in the world's museums is online. All manner of music, analysis, papers, thesis across almost every conceivable topic and viewpoint is online. It may take a critical mind to determine what's useful and what's shit, but then, noone should be doing your thinking for you anyway - unless you listen to Limbaugh, Hannity or that Transgender ghoul Ingraham.

If they did, the general public would see that of all (about) 6,950,000 positive cases so far there were about 202,000 deaths.
That amounts for a 2.9% mortality without regard for any age ranges or comorbidities.

So, here's the thing. I've seen lots of threads here and elsewhere, on these 'what's the important stat' and there's usually some merit in many of them. But I think, and this is perhaps wishful thinking (and If I"m wrong I'm sure my War of Independence OG PMSclaine will set me straight in a genteel manner), that the real issue is not so much that this is a deadly disease like ebola, but that IF you get it, and IF it manifests itself into serious symptoms, THEN without treatment, you will die. It's that last part, I'm hoping, is the thinking behind all else because if the concern is "we don't have enough beds and capacity to treat a lot of people if they get really sick", then the mortality rate of those infected and with serious symptoms, would increase.
I'm fairly sure I've had it, I went throug a week of serious headaches, bad congestion and shortness of breath but no aches or cough or fever. I wasn't too worried for that reason, I wasn't seriously sick. But if I got sick, and the beds were full, then that'd be a bit of a cause for a sphincter clench and a fox hole prayer of the atheist.
As to being a Limey. Well, I'm American (as of 2012) and not to brag, but I'm pretty sure I'm more fluent in the Constitution than the average born American.

My concerns include sympathy for the sick, the elderly and the relatively few healthy people that died from covid but I look at a larger population harmed just as grievously by our reaction.....
Business owners that have seen their lives investment ruined. Employees for those businesses out of work.
Young people that had built a savings to buy that first house or have that first child now spending it down trying to survive unemployment despite their ability and desire to work.
The guy that had a dermatologist appointment or a colonoscopy scheduled in March being told this coming November "Sorry. Had we caught it earlier we could have saved you."
The depressed walking off into the woods with rope or gun for the last time....its a fact its happening.

Wife had a co-worker (IT guy) over the house last night to help set up the home office/work connection. He is naturalized American of Indian (Asian) decent. Wore his mask the entire time in our house. He is defeated. In our short conversation about covid, which his wife survived with no symptoms - but tested positive for - probably a false positive - so much for stats, he summed it up as this is the way the world will be from now on.

Immigration is good and necessary. It brings people into our country with the balls to leave home and hearth for the unknown. Something has changed though.
In the past they came from shit and only asked for a chance that their home country would not provide them. They wanted opportunity to succeed based on their willingness to work and their brains.
Now they come here either looking for a handout or they want to lecture us on how their former countries were smarter and we should be like what they left. They acknowledge our Constitution and as they express an appreciation for its blessings the always add the word "but" to their opinions.

Not impressed with the current batch of immigrants Id suggest we only take people from behind the former Iron Curtain. They seem to appreciate what the US Constitution recognizes as natural rights and its limits on the ability of government to meddle in their lives. Im guessing Cubans and Venezuelans would come up here and bleed Red, White and Blue if given the chance to.
