This question is for you left hand savage/stevens guys.

Do you guys run left port-left bolt, right port-right bolt or right port-left bolt?

I have a stevens 200 action I'm considering building which is currently in the stock configuration of right bolt-right port. I'm thinking about converting it to LEFT bolt - Right port.

What are your thoughts and suggestions.

Please don't turn this thread into a "You should buy another brand Rifle / Action thread" I'm asking about a specific action and build.

Thanks

Re: Left Hand Savage Question

I'm a lefty and run left bolt left port guns. My next rifle will be Right bolt Right port. If you are shooting prone from a sling you will want a left bolt left port. If you are shooting from a bipod you will want a right bolt right port, that way you don't need to break position to feed the rifle. Standing shooting is best to be left bolt, and it doesn't much matter what port the case fly's out of as long as you have another in the mag to keep shooting.

This has been my experience, your mileage may vary.

Re: Left Hand Savage Question

Just a thought... but have you considered a Striker action instead?? Instead of paying potentially tons of money to get a gunsmith to try and convert it to LB/RP.get the factory made one. I've kicked around the idea of building up one cause I'm RH but shoot rifles LH, so for me the layout just made sense for shooting in the prone, run the bolt with the left and be able to deal with and feeding or loading issues with the right. The the advantage of being able to look down while still mounted on the gun to adress any issues that may arise.

Just somethin to think about.

Re: Left Hand Savage Question

I have thought about a striker action however please correct me if I'm wrong I was told it was a single shot and I would have to mill out the bottom of the action for a DBM.

Re: Left Hand Savage Question

I like the left and left. The only time I have ever really liked the right bolt or port is when shooting PD and then it is more of a rapid fire kind of thing. Right ports are only handy when you need to see in the action when you are constantly fiddling with ammo like in a rifle that does not have an ejector.
