What’s up fellas, I’m knew to the hide and have a rudimentary question that seems to have been covered several times already but I’m having issues with setting my LOP on my savage 10 in an XLR industries chassis. Elbow pit to bent trigger finger, correct? I come up with 12.5” but after adjusting the but stock to that I’m all up on the damn scope. Just wanted to check that I’m looking at this right before I move the scope.

Assuming you're around 5'10, start at around 13.75" LOP. Take the scope off and get behind the rifle prone. If your wrist is at a comfortable angle, you're good. If not, adjust LOP in or out until it feels right. Then mount your scope and set your eye relief.

John Barsness, the gun writer from Rifle / Handloader magazines, once SUGGESTED in an article that the following rule of thumb would generally fit most people; obviously dependent upon personal physiology. Starting with a 13 1/2 " LOP for a person 5'10" tall, you add / subtract 1/8" for every 1" taller/ shorter a person is than 5'10" . For example, a person 5'8" tall would probably do well with a LOP of 13 1/4" ( 5'10" - 5'8" = 2 inches X 1/8" = 1/4" subtracted from 13 1/2" ). Seems to work well for me and most of my shooting acquaintances. Of course, YMMV. Good luck. Hope this helps some.

Set the rifle to fit you, then mount the optic. Get comfortable behind the rifle in various positions and find a good solid lop/cheek/cant/etc. and then mount the scope with a proper eye relief.

Thanks guys. sgtsmmii kinda nailed it. I tried kl3309 take on it, as the 12.5” was just way to fuckin short, and moved around until it felt right in all positions and came up with 13 3/8” and I’m 5’9ish so using the 13.5” +\- an 1/8” per 1” came out on the money. Its pretty wierd as I’ve always been told the elbow to second knuckle on my index finger but have never needed to use that method until now . I will stop advising that’s the way to do it because that was way too short! Thanks guys.

Do it if it's more comfortable for you but then you're SOL shooting from the opposite shoulder.
I'd adjust the buttpad height first (so that the curvature of the pad matches up with the contour of your shoulder pocket).

i also measure myself at a 12.5" LOP......and thats what all my other match rifles are set at......however on the XLRs it feels really cramped setting it that low.......i ened up bumping my stock length out around an inch, and have plenty of clearance, hanvent really noticed any difference in shooting with the 1" extra of pull

although if your LOP works well for you, you should have plenty of room to move that scope.

Most shooters are using a rifle stock whose length of pull is too long. There. Now that that is out of the way..

...if 12.5" is what you got, then that is a reasonable starting point. If you are "all up on the scope", then you are normal for about 95% of the guys attempting to talk about this matter.

Move the scope. If needed, due to the ridiculously long eye relief on almost all modern scopes, get a longer rail so you can push the scope out past the front of the receiver.

Steel is more better.
