Anybody tried one of these? I need one and looked at this one but noticed it takes 6-48 and 8-40 screws. Must be tapered but do they work with the 6-48?

I’ve used one before. Never had any issues with it but I did end up replacing it with a badger rail but that was just because I prefer badger.

This rail is tapped to use both 6-48 and 8-40 so now do you understand why I am questioning it?
WTF

That's easy. The tapered screw head centers in the tapered hole. The taper holds center, not the screw body.
(BTW, rail isn't tapped, it's bored/drilled. No threads.)

I like Leupold, have one that hasn't missed a beat. It hasn't moved riding around in the truck for months now.

That said, most of mine are EGW because they make something for everything and they're solid. EGW gives you the drill bit size to bore the holes big enough for a #8, so they're machined for #6 to start.

Both the 1-piece and 2-piece Mark 4 scope bases are proven and definitely good to go.

They're great to have if someday you decide to blueprint your receiver and upgrade the holes to 8/40, you won't have to buy another base.

If you want to spend over twice as much for the piece of mind, go with a Badger base. They have an awesome built-in recoil lug but their 1-pc. bases are a little bit longer than the Leupolds.

Like someone else said, the rail isn't tapped. The rail is drilled and counterbored. The counterbore fits the head of the screw, which is obviously larger in diameter than the thread's major diameter.

Here's what Leupold has to say:
Mark 4® Tactical Bases are the only bases to accommodate both the oversized 8-40 screw and a 6-48 screw, providing compatibility with the widest range of modern tactical firearms. Both styles of screws are included with each Mark 4 base.

Maybe I'm off base but it sounds you think you need to use both screw sizes? If that's the case, no. Use whatever size screw your receiver is tapped for. The base will accommodate either.

I don't think that I need to use both screw sizes. My other rails are either bored for 6-48 or 8-40 not both. These are priced right but I have no experience with a rail that has a tapered hole to accommodate 2 different screw sizes. So I was just wandering if anybody had used one of these rails and had any problems with them using either screw size.

You're overthinking it.

Run it, the mark series stuff is solid. Quit overanalyzing.

I really like Mark 4 rings and such, but I would recommend against their base. I’m assuming you’re talking R700 platform here since to my knowledge those are the ones that they ship both size screws with. They don’t have a built in recoil lug and IMO that’s an important features on a rail that 4 little screws are taking the entire load.

A good quality base that has a lug and is budget friendly is the Weaver tactical.

Personally I’d just look on the classifieds here for a used Badger or NF though. You can pick them up gently used for not much more.
