I just returned from the SHOT show and made certain I spent some time with the new Leupold mil/mil scope. I saw two models, one a 3.5-10x40mm and the other a 4.5-14x50mm. The turrets looked similar to the M1 but were marked "M5" on top and said something like "0.1 mil/click". I think both scopes had TMR FFP (IIRC) reticles, or the 3.5-10x might have had a mil dot.

The second piece of good news is that the M5 turret clicks felt crisp, distinct, and not too close together- really nice actually. I think there were 5 mils per turn, with the M1-style system of indicating which turn you are on. All the other Leupolds I tried had very mushy clicks, so the new M5 was a pleasant surprise. Sorry, no pix.

Re: Leupold M5 turret (SHOT show)

No, but I saw a few of that scope on some of the PSR rifle prototypes (like the Ashbury and Remington) because the scope is anodized in FDE and looks like it was designed for the Jetsons. The windage turret is "bag assed" as well, but when you unscrew the windage cap the actual windage knob is a black M2-sized knob.

Re: Leupold M5 turret (SHOT show)

There is a new Leupold with large turrets, a rev indicator, and a 34mm tube, no pics of it, but I got one of the M5. Feels like the M1, which is to say good! I can see a ton of M1 going in for refit of the M5.

I'll keep my MK4 if that can be retro'd at a reasonable cost...

No kidding!!! If anyone at SHOT is reading this, please find out if a retrofit of the Leupold M1 knobs on the Mk4 scopes will be possible with the M5 knobs...that would be great!!

Re: Leupold M5 turret (SHOT show)

There's another thread on here about the turret conversion. In short, most scopes will probably be convertable, but it may be sometime mid to late next year before they offer the conversion.

Re: Leupold M5 turret (SHOT show)

I asked the Luepy rep there about conversions of existing scopes (I have 6 I'm gonna get converted), and he said it would be late this year or maybe early next year. He said they knew it would be a huge bunch of conversions and they have to get ready.

But all new parts will be used to build new scopes and until that market is caught up, the conversions won't be started.

And, if the military wants to convert, they will have priority.

I hope he's wrong and they ramp up fast!

Re: Leupold M5 turret (SHOT show)

I wholly agree that if the military decides to convert...they should asbolutely get first priority. I will also gladly wait on conversions if they'll save me from buying new scopes...MUCH more cost effective!!

Re: Leupold M5 turret (SHOT show)

Probably a stupid question but couldn´t they make a M5 turret to replace the M3 turrets ? This of course depends whether the klick value is built inside the scope or is it just a matter of switching the turrets to new versions ?

How is the M3 3.5-10X40 built ? Would this be possible as a bolt-on modification ?

Re: Leupold M5 turret (SHOT show)

So without getting bashed-
what does 1 click .1 mil = in inch/minute
on the m5 knob at 100 yd. what to see why more shooters want to convert?

thanks

Re: Leupold M5 turret (SHOT show)

A milliradian is an angle which subtends an arc whose length at every distance is 1/1000th of the distance from the vertex.

One hundred yards is 3600 inches.

Therefore, the arc length of an angle of 1 milliradian is 3.6 inches at a distance of 100 yards, and 0.1 milliradian therefore 0.36 inches.

Re: Leupold M5 turret (SHOT show)

Wow, I didn't know Leupold was actually advancing lol! I am going to guess it will take a while until they really get going on conversions. My guess is 2 years.
I'd like a conversion myself.

Do you post on every thread Lindy?

Re: Leupold M5 turret (SHOT show)

If they military doesn't covert, we're a bunch of R-Tards! As I understand it, the rebuilt M24's will have the M5 on it, so it would only be logical to convert the existing M2's and M1's. Talk about a good way to get yourself confused.

Re: Leupold M5 turret (SHOT show)

Dear Shane,
The M5 version scopes are actually built with different geometry inside. Their adjustments will not work in our other Mark 4 scopes.

If aftermarket modifications have been done to our scopes we will service the scope if the modifications do not prevent it. We assume no liability ofr other companie’s work.

Thank you.

Subject: 15 Nov 10 M5 upgrade

I have a MK4 M1 x10 that I would like to have M5 .1mil dials on. Back in the 90's I had a Premire mildot reticle put in. Will that effect what upgrades I can have done?
Thank you for your time.

Shane

Re: Leupold M5 turret (SHOT show)

this sort of relates to this post, I have the new 4.5X15 X50 ER/T with M5 turrets and I am getting over 33mils of total elevation, I have a friend who has the 6.5 x 20 x50 he is getting 28 mils. Both of us have 0 moa cant bases. I am wondering what other people are getting for elevation in there M5 based scopes. Because the specs for the 6.5 x 20 x 50 is 70 moa which equates to 22 mils. So maybe somehow these new turrets are providing more adjustment elevation than the M1 turrets???? Also if you notice on the Leupold website all the m5 turret based er/t have more elevation than the m1 er/t scopes, I was thinking this was a type o but perhaps the new m5 really does provide more elevation.

Re: Leupold M5 turret (SHOT show)

I have an M1 10x that I would like to have converted to an M5 turret system.

Here is a video we did on the M5. I will have more info as I do more testing. So far I really like it.

Heres the 4.5-14x50mm ERT M5 TMR on my Rem 700P 300winmag. Im also getting a lot of internal travel. Very impressed so far. Shooting sub MOA with factory 165g barnes triple shocks.

Around how much internal travel are you getting? I would like to see if anyone here has the 6.5x20 X 50mm ER/T w/m5 or perhaps Mike at CS-Tactical if you can confirm the internal travel on one. Like I said my friend is getting 28mils, I just want to make sure his isn't a fluke. IMO the 6.5x20x50 would be the perfect magnification range.

I think that ad is very misleading or maybe just misunderstood. I think they really mean upgrade to a new scope. I have five fixed power MARK 4 scopes and I can't even get a TMR reticle installed much less M5 dials.

upgrade from a 30mm tube to a 34mm? that must be some type of conversion bordering on unlikely

Ha!

No matter what leupold writes the end result will be that leupold will do nothing.

You will have no famous leupold warranty if anyone other than leupold modifies your scope in any way.

And now there is now no warranty in Canada if the leupold scope didn't come thru their own distribution system.
