I’m looking to build a nice, accurate, lightweight hunter that I could use for whitetail in the Midwest to mule deer, pronghorn, and elk out west.

I have a nice little model 7 in 308 that bought when I was like 12 way back in the day. I have killed many many deer with. It’s a 1 MOA gun.

I’m thinking of getting a Carbon Six Remage carbon barrel. Should i stay with 308?? What length? Would my stock channel be able to accommodate the larger sendero profile barrel?

I’d also like to have someone true up the action if I do this while it’s apart. Any recommendations?

Or I don’t do any of that and build a 6.5 PRC from scratch. What would you guys do?!

If shooting > 500 yrds build from scratch. I love my 6.5 PRC.

You could definitely take Elk with 156 gr Berger EOL's in 6.5 PRC. Fraction of the recoil of my .300 WBY Mag which I've used for elk previously. Ballistics are almost identical at 550 yds and even better favoring the 6.5 PRC at 800 yds compared to a Nosler 165gr AB in the WBY.

I was in a similar position several years ago with my first rifle. It was a model 7 in 6mm. I had it rebarreled to 308 with a Shilen select #3 profile, 20” long. It is light enough to make a handy hunting rig, and accurate enough for long distance. It fills many roles for me.
