Hey folks, school me up quick on something…
I went to order a Lilja recce barrel. The 15.1” length the supplied for one iteration of the NSW Recce rifle. Lilja tells me the only make those in “drop-in ready” format in a 1:8 twist.
I thought the NSW Recce was a 1:7 for the mk262 ammo and heavier, no?
Were the barrels they supplied for the NSW Recce Rifle in fact 8 twist? If so I’m guessing they will handle the 77 SMK fine?

I know others make a Recce barrel in 7 twist but I just really like Lilja and was surprised they were 8 twist.

Any experts care to set me straight and/or opine on how an 8 twist will
So with mk262 ammo? I’ve also got a lot of Barnes 70 tsx (so fun!!!)

I wouldn’t use a CLGS either, as it makes no sense, especially for that blaster with a suppressor or naked.

I would chamber it in something that hits steel harder if you really want to enjoy it as well.

As long as it looks like this, you’ll be fine from the outside:

I get it. I’ve read similar posts about going heavier. ..seriously debating it.

I’ve got a clone correct CAG/NSW RECCE. 16” lilja, KAC M4 Match (aka FF RAS) milspec NF 2.5-10x32, prototype m249f flasher and all. Been thinking about a SAM-R or 15.1 in 22arc or something but I’m trying to stay out of the clone/ar15 game. So I get it.

Modern 80gr 223/556 are doing more than most shooters are capable enough. I’ve seen a ridgeline hit at 1000yds with 80gr ammo.

I love me some .mil clones and appreciate the work that goes into doing a correct build. But we’ve come a long ways in tech. I’d get the Lilja and try some different ammo. I think you’ll find out that Hornady Tap and some newer loads will serve you better

To me, it’s always interesting to see guys drop up to $10k on an SPR-type AR-15, only to chamber it in something that barely nicks the paint at 400yds and everyone has to be really quiet just to get a chance to see if they can hear it impact.

I’ve dropped literally scores of thousands of dollars into the latest capabilities in AR-15s I’ve owned, dating back to 1987, and have a ton of them chambered in 5.56 NATO. They just sit on the shelves collecting dust because I can’t hear it when they hit at the distances I like to shoot at (400-1200yds). For Close Quarters Marksmanship, they’re great. No complaints at all. Fast shot recovery, reliable, fun, easy to run rapid strings into A Zones, but SPR-type builds are kinda heavy for that.

The NSW Recce 15.1” barrel with KAC FF RAS is my favorite of all the Mk.12-type configurations, and superior to the others in my view. For intermediate-long range shooting, it really is a great match to chamber it in 6.5 Grendel or 6mm.

You should hear how loud it is when hitting a 2 MOA plate with Grendel at 907yds even, just repeatedly choosing on the plate where you want to put a round. There is no doubt when you hit it, very similar to the sound of 168gr .308 Win, but you just watch your reticle and the bullet fly-in. It’s very fun.

I can make hits on larger steel gongs with 5.56 all-day, even from shorter barrels. I won’t be able to hear or see it, and need to drive down to the target to see where the hits are. I also don’t see bullet splash effects with 5.56 even at 400yds on steel, because there isn’t enough projectile mass to produce visible splash effects. It vaporizes like any other bullet, but there’s only so much lead in the core.
