This is a future build that I have been considering for awhile.

I have the parts pretty much chosen but I'm undecided on the 7mm Rem Mag or the WSM.

I have a hunting rifle in 7mm RM now, so not having to tool up for another caliber would be nice but in the end I'd like to know if anyone has used the two calibers at longer ranges in similar builds. If so was there any consideration in accuracy when choosing one over the other?

I'm looking at loading up the 180gr. VLD for either round.

The rifle I'm looking at putting together will use the following parts:

Big Horn Action and 20moa Base
McMillan A-5 with Integral Cheek Piece
Timney Trigger
American Rifle Company Rings
27" Chanlynn or Schneider twist 1:8 threaded for a Gemtech QD HVT

I'm un-decided which scope I will run on this but until I can really make my final decision to even do the build I'm curious what others feel about the caliber choices.

Thanks

Re: Long Range Build in 7mm WSM or 7mm Rem Mag

I looked into those calibers as well for my next build and I've moved towards the 7STW. I just feel it's a better fit for extreme long range and my check book. I doubt you can go wrong with either but if you already have the dies you need and can share brass so you can buy in bulk to me that would be a no brainer.

Good luck,
Merritt

i am absolutely in love with my 7wsm it is a blast to shoot recoil is about the same as a 308. It hits targets hard as hell and is super flat.

If I was building a 7mm with a clean slate, I'd go with the SAUM.

Considering you already have a 7mm Rem, you might want to go that route. You could squeeze a lot of powder behind those 180's and really get em cookin.

Also, I can highly recommend the Bighorn/Chanlynn/Timney/American Rifle Company combo. I went that route for my .308 build, and I couldn't be happier. If you put all that in a Mcrees chassis, you'd have a 7mm clone of my gun.

Re: Long Range Build in 7mm WSM or 7mm Rem Mag

Since you already have the components for the 7RM, that is route I would go. Throat is correctly and 3050-3100 with 180's is easily obtainable with Retumbo and a 27" barrel. I would consider using a 8.7-9 twist though. The 8 isn't the friendliest with Berger hunting jackets. The Rem Mag will also push the 180's faster with a little less pressure than the WSM.

Both will be accurate if put together correctly. Broke in a customers 10lb 7RM over the weekend and shot a .1" 3 shot group at 100 with his 14x scope.

no one said 7 WSM is short action i believe and i know the Rem Mag is a long if you have the action you might only be able to go the 1 way

Re: Long Range Build in 7mm WSM or 7mm Rem Mag

I would go 7 WSM. Same performance in a shorter, lighter rifle. Some people go as short as 22", but I would use a 23"-24" barrel.

Re: Long Range Build in 7mm WSM or 7mm Rem Mag

i would build the rifle on a long action either way

that way you can build either a wsm or 7rm now and then down the road you can spin on different barrels, neigher one is going to be friendly on barrels, and if you shoot it a bunch you are going to replace them. i just feel a magnum long action gives you more options down the road,7saum, 300rum, 338 edge, 300 win mag etc the list goes on

if you run a wsm seat the bullets out long

depending on how much brass work you want to take on i hear great things about a 7-300wsm, but a 7wsm or 7rm is no slouch either

what's the purpose of this rifle??
