What are some good optics that can get me out to 1500-2000 yards for under or around 2 grand? I'm thinking something in the 5-20/25x range. So far I've found the swfa super sniper 5-20x for $1,500 and I'm thinking that's as good as it gets...

Edit: I'm shooting a .338 or a .300, I didn't want to mention it before because I didn't want to distract anyone from what I was wanting. I would like to be able to see my target clearly, even if it is further than what my ballistics and my shooting ability can get me.

Re: Long Range Glass

You are basically talking about reticle travel, no? Alot also depends on the ballistics of the gun/bullet combo you are shooting.

But yes, the SWFA 5-20 and the Bushnell HDMR are probably the best two scopes to get you there, assuming your ballistics can make it.

Re: Long Range Glass

A good 5.5-22 NightForce will work great for you. You can most likely pick one up gently used here on the Hide for $1500 or less. Shooting at those distances you mentioned, you'll appreciate the finer recticle of a SFP optic. The SSHD 5-20 i had was too thick for my liking at 800 and beyond on max power, but that's just MY opinion and is the nature of a FFP optic. I no longer own it and haven't lost sleep over it. I can't comment on the HDMR, Ive only looked through one briefly, other than they had a big following before and during the release, now you don't really hear much at all about them, just like the SSHD. That could be a good thing though as maybe there havent been many issues with them?

Re: Long Range Glass

I have a 5-25x sn3 and can't imagine shooting at 1500 plus yards without at least preferring 25x magnification. I would look at used nightforce let someone else take the hit in a new product while u get more scope for your money.

Re: Long Range Glass

Unless you are shooting at really big targets at 1500-2000 yards I agree with trevor300WSM. I prefer the SFP scopes for the reticle thickness at long range targets. I don't think you can do much better than a used NF 5.5-22. Keep looking here in the optics section and you will find one for under 1500. Plus you will have the added piece of mind with the NF reliability on a heavy caliber like 338.

Re: Long Range Glass

I use a NF 5.5-22x50, ZS, HS on a .338 Lapua. Shots to 2000 are doable but in my case, a first round hit is hard to come by @ 2000. It can be done at 1500 without a strong wind. Both can be dialed in though.

Re: Long Range Glass

I have a DTA in 338, 308, and 6.5 CM. When I started heavy into long range my passion and goal was ELR. I had a NF 5.5-22x56 NPR2. Worked great for my needs, until my first tactical competition. Then I knew I needed FFP. I got a SS 5-20 and sold the NF.

Honestly the glass and reticle on the SS is better. FFP was a huge improvement on what I am currently doing. Elevation travel is almost the same. I don't really care about ELR anymore, but the other day we went to 2130 yards and the SS did every bit as good as the NF did. My one annoyance with the SS is the turret caps not lining up perfectly. This issue is well documented here in SH if you care to look into it. However, at ELR this slightly off value of .0-.1 Mil will be no big deal.

Next week my new scope comes in. March-F 3-24 FFP. Can't wait, but really appreciate how far that SS got me. Either way you go, you will be happy.

Re: Long Range Glass

Well, I was thinking of hitting your match Sunday. Won't have the glass yet, but it will be good to hang with you guys on your home turf. I should have the March by the TPRC though.

Later Steve

Re: Long Range Glass

Sprice, I would definitely look at the IOR 6-24x56 35mm FFP for under 2000 and theres also the IOR 6-24x50 35mm SFP scope for $1600, I think. The glass is comparable to S&B imho, although I agree with the postings above, especially with regards for the need of a FFP scope if the rifle is being used for ELR only, and the need for magnifcation at ELR. If you plan on shooting tactical matches later, FFP seems to be the way to go. If you really want some magnification I can't say anything bad about my NXS 12-42x56 that I use for F-class, but the glass in my IOR I do think is clearer.
