Hello Everyone,

I'm looking for experience or thoughts from those of you who shoot rimfire matches. Specifically, .22s. Several friends of mine are currently lobbying a local range to set up a rimfire match that will require a rimfire handgun, a semi-auto for tactical stages and possibly a third rifle for longer range shooting.

I recently started shooting my rimfires more and am actually frustrated at myself for not shooting them more over the last several years. While a group of us were talking at a local shop over the holidays, it became clear that I'm not the only one.

Most of us shoot competition in some form right now. There are a few Benchrest shooters, several IDPA shooters and a few of us prefer F-Class. What we came up with for a match will bring the best of each of these together and since we are shooting rimfires, we can shoot more often or local ranges and farms for less than when we shoot centerfire.

The long range shooting will most likely be shot with bolt action .22s, although I am aware that there are lots of incredible accurate 10-22s out there. This portion of the match will be unknown distance and will vary from 15 yards to 150 yards, very similar to the matches I've seen mentioned here and other places on the web.

The tactical portion with rifles will be shot with semi-auto .22s. The stages will have targets anywhere from 10-15 feet up to 80 yards. I see this part of the match being perfect for 10-22s, as well as the GSGs and the AR varients from S&W and Colt. Think of this as being similar to the rifle stage of a 3 gun match.

This brings me to the third portion of the match, the tactical handgun. This will be ran just like an IDPA match. The ranges will be the same and the stages will be taken from matches we have seen before along with new ones we create. It will be shot with semi-auto .22s, although I'm sure we won't tell someone they can't shoot if the bring a revolver.

The problem I have is trying to decide on a new handgun to buy for this part of the match. I have rifles that will work for the long range, and have decided on the S&W M&P 15-22 for the tactical rifle, but the only rimfire pistols I own are older Ruger MK IIs with the mag release on the bottom of the grip. I have looked at the Sig Mosquito, the Walther P22, a few Buckmarks and a few of the Rugers. I even found a used Sig Trailside for $350. All of them have some strong points and weaknesses.

If YOU were in my shoes, what pistol would you choose? The pistol must be accurate, reliable and allow for quick reloads.

Sorry for this being so long, but I think we have the right idea for a full day of shooting that will be fun for everyone. I'm sure others have already done this, but when I searched, I couldn't find any information on matches such as this.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Get a ruger 22/45... It has the mag release in the same position as the 1911 and its very popular among our crowd of steel shooters... I use a ruger mark III for these types of competitions because the mag release is a push button by the trigger guard similar to the 22/45 but fits my hand much better...

+1. I have had my 5.5" blued 22/45 for years and shot many thousands of rounds through it, learned a lot, and would trade it for nothing.

I would use a Ruger Mark III.

Accuracy. Check.

Reliability. Check, with the disabling of the LCI (loaded chamber indicator)

Quick Reloads. Check, with the free-fall mag mod (removal of the mag disconnect)

Those mods may not be necessary, but I sure like them a lot.

Thanks for the info. I guess it's good to know on the Ruger. I have been checking them out and like them, also came across a Buckmark that I really liked, but can't find the damn thing on Browning's website to know which model it is.

Do any of you use a Buckmark, or is the Ruger the King of the Hill?

Thanks again!

I'd vote for the Ruger too. I've got a std. MKI and Tac.Sol. upper on a MKII. I've been fighting the urge to buy a MKIII strictly for the mag release.

Have you thought about running a conversion on a centerfire? I bought a Kimber conversion to use in Steel Challenge matches and wish I'd bought one a long time ago. I'd read where some folks mentioned reliability issues but it seemed that most finally settled on CCI Mini-Mags. After reading that, I started with the mini-mags and haven't had any FTF's or FTE's yet.

A buddy of mine has a few of the Glock conversions and they run great too. IIRC, his are the Advantage Arms.

The only downside to the Kimber conversion is the mags do not drop free. With a little practice it's really not a problem. I've also read where the metal, Ceiner mags will work (hold 15rds too) but they're a little harder to find.

I've got a CZ SP01 with the Kadet conversion and would definitely recommend it. The mags drop free and are obviously a bit bigger a normal single stack 22 mag making reloads a little faster imo. The buckmarks are easier to tear down and clean than the Rugers in my experience.

I've also had good experience with the CZ / Kadet setup. For IDPA type competition, I'd find it more functional than the Ruger.

Just a quick comment on what sounds like a really outstandingly good idea. How are you going to deal with optics, this seems to be the decider on making a match competitive for a variety of firearms models?

I hope you let us know what you come up with and how it works out, just wish I were closer to E. Tenn.
