Hello Everyone,
I'm looking for experience or thoughts from those of you who shoot rimfire matches. Specifically, .22s. Several friends of mine are currently lobbying a local range to set up a rimfire match that will require a rimfire handgun, a semi-auto for tactical stages and possibly a third rifle for longer range shooting.
I recently started shooting my rimfires more and am actually frustrated at myself for not shooting them more over the last several years. While a group of us were talking at a local shop over the holidays, it became clear that I'm not the only one.
Most of us shoot competition in some form right now. There are a few Benchrest shooters, several IDPA shooters and a few of us prefer F-Class. What we came up with for a match will bring the best of each of these together and since we are shooting rimfires, we can shoot more often or local ranges and farms for less than when we shoot centerfire.
The long range shooting will most likely be shot with bolt action .22s, although I am aware that there are lots of incredible accurate 10-22s out there. This portion of the match will be unknown distance and will vary from 15 yards to 150 yards, very similar to the matches I've seen mentioned here and other places on the web.
The tactical portion with rifles will be shot with semi-auto .22s. The stages will have targets anywhere from 10-15 feet up to 80 yards. I see this part of the match being perfect for 10-22s, as well as the GSGs and the AR varients from S&W and Colt. Think of this as being similar to the rifle stage of a 3 gun match.
This brings me to the third portion of the match, the tactical handgun. This will be ran just like an IDPA match. The ranges will be the same and the stages will be taken from matches we have seen before along with new ones we create. It will be shot with semi-auto .22s, although I'm sure we won't tell someone they can't shoot if the bring a revolver.
The problem I have is trying to decide on a new handgun to buy for this part of the match. I have rifles that will work for the long range, and have decided on the S&W M&P 15-22 for the tactical rifle, but the only rimfire pistols I own are older Ruger MK IIs with the mag release on the bottom of the grip. I have looked at the Sig Mosquito, the Walther P22, a few Buckmarks and a few of the Rugers. I even found a used Sig Trailside for $350. All of them have some strong points and weaknesses.
If YOU were in my shoes, what pistol would you choose? The pistol must be accurate, reliable and allow for quick reloads.
Sorry for this being so long, but I think we have the right idea for a full day of shooting that will be fun for everyone. I'm sure others have already done this, but when I searched, I couldn't find any information on matches such as this.
Thanks in advance,
Chris
