I was hoping I could ask for some advice on where to go from here or corrections on any misconceptions on what I actually need. I’m basically looking to start into PRS and had been doing a lot of research but unsure of where this would rank as a competition build or what I would need to buy instead.

MDT ACC Chasis

Defiance - Deviant action Short throw but I’m unsure on which variant to purchase.

Vais 6.5 muzzle brake

A Satern 26 inch barrel was what I had in mind but neede some direction in where to go beyond the length

I have a feeling that what components guys (and gals) use changes by region. I think the really good guys find a combo they like and a lot of local guys follow them. I can tell you what is popular in my area.

Action: Impact reigns supreme. There are some Tempest actions and some TL3's. I'm sure there are others, I use a Nucleus, but those are the main ones.

Stock/chassis: Foundation is really popular as is Manners PRS1/2. I've heard people are ordering the new Manners TCS so we will see. I also see MPA chassis and maybe a few MDT.

Barrel: Bartlein. I'm sure there are others, but Bartlein is the most popular. As for finished length, as long as you can get. 28" is pretty standard.

Muzzle Break: That is more open. I use a 419 Hellfire. That Vais break won't do much.

Caliber: There are still a lot of 6.5 Creeds out there, but 6 BR/BRA/BRX/Dasher/GT are the most popular. For a guy starting out I would go Creed. More recoil but more barrel life.

Rifles are getting heavier. Bigger profile barrels, weight kits in stocks/chassis, and longer barrels. This is to reduce recoil.

Stock or chassis is a personal choice. Make sure to get behind a chassis before you buy it. I am not a fan of chassis. Don't like the feel or AR grips. I like a more traditional stock like a Manners. A Manners with a mini chassis is best of both worlds.

That Defiance action is very good. No issues there.

The Vais brake is not a good choice. You don't want that style. Something like the PVA Jet 4 or 419 would be a better choice for both recoil reduction and not blowing up dirt. A self timing brake also allows you to take it off if needed for cleaning.

For barrels Bartlein is a great choice. There are some others like Kreiger or Hawk Hill that are also excellent.

26" is a good length. I run 28" myself. Contour I would say go with something in the M24/40 area so you have some weight but not overly heavy. For twist, an 8 twist will work well with up to 147s.

What is your background in rifle shooting thus far, specifically the type of shooting done in comps?

I would ditch the idea of a vais brake, like others have also stated. My only experience is with APA lil bastard and Area 419 Hellfire. They both work great but I find that I feel less or no blast in my face with the Hellfire. I’ve heard good things about the PVA Jetblast and the Piercision self timing brakes, too.

I would recommend going to a class where they have rifles available to use, so you can get an idea of what works for you (and to learn, of course). Also, go to a local match. Show up early, meet people, check out their gear and see how everything works before you drop a bunch of money with no clue.

I’ve never heard of Satern barrels... It looks like their specialty is AR barrels, service rifle, M1 Garand replacement barrels. I would get a blank from Bartlein personally. I kept my first barrel light ( Remington Varmint contour) and my rifle doesn’t balance well on a barricade; the front end is lighter. I will be going with a heavier contour next time around (either Marksman or Heavy Palma).
