I am newly intrested in precison shooting.
The only rifle I have that is up for long range is a Browning A bolt medallion in 300 win mag with the Boss compensator.
It has a decent wood stock and is a nice hunting rifle.

I would like to hear opinons on if I should try to use this rifle to build into a precision shooter or sell this one and try to buy a remington or savage.

The poblem I see with the Browning is it is hard to find aftermarket parts for.
What do you guys think?

By the way, Hi I am new here!
Thanks for your time,
Ned

Re: looking for advice

The A bolt is a great hunting platform, but as you have already noted, parts are limited. For the price of that A bolt you could get a good remington 700, great system to begin with. With tons of options and parts, you can enjoy building "YOUR" own precision weapon. Also I would advise to start with the 7.62(308), cheaper to shoot and less painfull.

Re: looking for advice

To be honest that is kinda what I expect to hear.
Unfortunitly I have been reloading for this rifle for years and kinda like it.
I was hoping someone would know of a few manufacturers that make products for the browning.
Otherwise looks like I may be parting ways with my browning.

Re: looking for advice

It's hard to find "cool" after market parts for Browing. There is nothing wrong with a 300 win mag. The only difference between the 308 and 300 wm is the extra powders, and more recoil when you shoot. I would consider looking into a Remy. Just a thought.

Re: looking for advice

Nothing wrong with the Abolts....just get a MCM stock..they inlet for most of the A series I belive...A5 at least...have it inlet for the barrel channel you would ideally have and shoot the factory barrel untill it is gone, who cares if you have extra barrel channel clearance? The Abolt bottom metal is just fine, has the detatchable magazine and everything, not quite a tactical as the ones for the 700's but it costs you nothing. Keep it in 300WM and have a medium contour barrel screwed on and then if you decide to sell it the hunting based guys will probably eat it up. Call the smith you would like to have rebarrel and make sure he can, somthing about the barrels or threads is not quite standard....but my local gunsmith showed me 3 rifles that he built on Abolts....MCM classics and nice fluted Obermyer barrels...one was a 300WM with a Vias on it.

700's are much more upgrade ready but if you already own an Abolt shoot it and build it....why not? What options do you want that the Abolt doesn't have?

Good idea of what an A bolt can do...

Re: looking for advice

Theres what I was hoping for, I didn't realize MCM had a stock for the A bolt.
Also I was discouraged when I couldn't find a picatinny base for it.
The one you show in that thread has a base on it, any idea who makes it?

Guess I should have read more carefully, in the description it says custom made.
That is a good example of my concern. I am thinking every little thing I want to do to this Browning will cost extra and take longer because it will have to be a custom part, so I am tempted to sell it and buy something more easy to get parts for.
