Hi I'm new to the forum!

I've decided that I would like to get into distance shooting (previously I've only focused on handguns and short range rifle practice)

I recently purchased a Sig SSG 3000 and need to purchase optics for it.

From what I've learned thus far, I believe I want the following:

1. Ranging FFP mil based reticle of some type
2. Mil adjustments
3. variable magnification somewhere from 3-6 on the low end and from 18-26 on the top end

What would you recommend?

Does it make sense to put a $3500 scope on for my first go at distance shooting or should I start more modestly? Will lower cost alternatives (Leupold/Bushnell/Etc.) provide adequate performance to learn (practice/classes/etc)?

TIA looks like a pretty neat forum

S&B 5-25 or 3-20 in H2CMR/MSR/P4F
Kahles 6-24 MSR-K
NF Beast in MIL-R

Take your pick. I went for 2x 5-25 S&B in H2CMR with CCW DT mil/mil

I agree with Peace. While there are a lot of great scopes out there these three always seem to come up as the top of the pack. S&B just went through a huge price hike and reduced thier warranty to 2 years as I understand it. Great scopes but coming in above you $3500 price. The Beast is really great and brand new with limited availability. Some good features and coming in at about $3500. The Kahles is coming in around $3k.

After looking through all 3, doing a lot of research and asking opinions I would rate the Schmidt at the top with the Kahles and Beast following on closely. While I can tell a difference in the Schmidt I dont think I can appreciate the $1k difference.

At that price find a place where you can look through them to see which you like the best, determine the reticle of choice and, ideally, shoot them. As someone told me recently, you cant go wrong with any of them. I am leaning towards the Kahles

If you're looking at Kahles, Schmidt, and the Beast class of scopes, I'd throw in a few others to the pile to check out:

Tangent Theta 5-25x56 (not cheap)
USO 5-25x58 (highly customizable)
Steiner 5-25x50 (good value)
RazorII 4.5-27x56 (cheaper alternative)

You've got a nice problem to have

There are a lot of great scopes out there and a lot have been listed.

For a lower cost alternative the Bushnell 3.5-21x are a great way to go, I have also been happy with the Leupold MK 4 6.5-20x M5. Another good scope that is a little more would be the Nightforce F1 3.5-15x50mm.

If we can be of help let me know for we sale almost all the scope.

If you're going to purchase a $3500 scope, do you have cash money remaining for training and good ammo (purchased or loading components)? If not, they are some very nice scopes out there sub $1000 to get you started.

It doesn't do you any good to be able to crank up the magnification then lay there thinking "uhmmmmm, so how do I hit it".

for that amount of money, I went with IOR Valdada Crusader 5.8-40x56 with 40mm tube. Optics is German and assembly is in Romania. Another choice would an FFP March Scope

Is great success…

Why, I mean why, would you you buy this Rumanishen shit? S&B not accurate enough?

You maybe right, maybe I have a fascination for Extra large zoom and over specs. My other scope on my Tikka T3 SS lite 30-06 is Bushnell 6500 Elite 4.5-30x50.
So far, I am not horrible disappointed.
