I am looking at building a Bolt action with internal magazine that has a 18.5" threaded barrel so I can suppress it.

My budget is somewhere in the $2000 range not including optics or can.

Ive done some searching around here with out much luck so looking for advice or links to previous builds.

Thanks for the help.

*edit* I am looking at .308 for the caliber

Re: Looking to Build a 18.5" rifle

Rifle will be used to kill nusance animals, hogs, coyotes...etc.

I want it to be .308

Not super heavy but also doesnt need to be ulta lightweight.

Looking to be taking shots with it up to 5-600 yards.

Re: Looking to Build a 18.5" rifle

My suggestion:

1. get a remington 700 5r

2. have a quality smith cut and thread the barrel to 18.5"

3. also have the smith true the action and bed it in the stock.

4. Lighten trigger to 2-3 lbs range

5r's shoot very well out of the box, so having this work done will make them even better.

I think the total should be well under $2k

Re: Looking to Build a 18.5" rifle

i ditto jpspeed

buy a 5r chop it down then drop it in a Mcm or manners stock

i am doing this myself

rem 700 aac-sd
McMillan Rem Varmint stock
Bushnell dmr gap scope

it's a poor mans Tac Ops Tango.

i will be into this for probably around $2250 or so total for the kit

i would be pressed to just buy a 20in threaded factory rem gun there are a few options.

then decide if that extra 1.5 in is worth it, i doubt you will see a big difference. if so chop it down.

Re: Looking to Build a 18.5" rifle

Just buy a new Savage precision carbine and have a local smith cut off 1.5" and use the left over money for a good scope and ammo

I agree- but not because I'm against eighteen inches- only because it is added cost in your budget.

Why not pick up a twenty inch 5R, XCR Compact, or LTR.

Then instead of chopping:

- Buy a bipod, TAB sling, or more ammo.
- Put it towards an even better scope than the one you are already considering.
- Ultra light rings and base.
- If you order a McMillan or Manners stock, the money saved by not cutting could go to the carbon fiber fill option making for a lighter and handier rifle. A stock that weighs a pound or more LESS than average will be far handier than a barrel lacking a measly inch and a half.

Re: Looking to Build a 18.5" rifle

Couple of additional questions.

Leaning towards a remington 700.

How big of a difference does having the action Trued make?
Also can I get some recomendations on who is good to send the gun to to have it trued?

Thanks

Re: Looking to Build a 18.5" rifle

It's all about the barrel... the action won't change things for you... put the money into the barrel.

As RG said, 1-10 twist is the order of the day, if you can swing it, a Tight Bore will help... Barrel, barrel, barrel.

Re: Looking to Build a 18.5" rifle

i've found that a 11.25 twist .299" bore works just fine with full power 175's loads in an 18.5" barrel.

i think you would be wasting money by buying a 5r as a donor rifle with immediate plans of replacing the barrel, truing the action and replacing the stock.

Why 1-10 twist? It is my understanding that twist has nothing to do with barrel length and most guys run a 1-11 or 1-11.25 twist for 175 grain rounds.

A few years ago I was issued a DARPA XM3 and I never understood why it was a 1-10 also.

Reason being- there isn't much of a downside as they handle the light bullets fine, but it will open up the possibilities of shooting subs. The purpose of the OP's build was as a dedicated suppressor host, that being the case, he might want to play around with subsonic loads a bit.

Re: Looking to Build a 18.5" rifle

Search for a S700 action, barrel, and have it smithed how you want it. My smith will true, chamber, and crown for 350. You'd probably have 1000 in the barreled action and get an HS takeoff stock. I'm doin this right now. I'm figuring 12-1300 for a trued bartlein barreled rifle. Not to bad!

Re: Looking to Build a 18.5" rifle

Marcus,

I have a Stiller TAC 30 with an 18.5" barrel (in front of the lug) laying around if you are interested...........?

Obermeyer 1 in 11.25" tist 5R rifling with bore dimensions of 298/308.

I built it to put it into an AICS 2.0 folder for a compact little hunting / plinking rig, but never finished putting it together.

I stuffed it into a D&L MR-30 chassis to shoot it for a little fun over the winter and now it is just sittng here with 40 or 50 rounds down the tube.

Just a thought!

Re: Looking to Build a 18.5" rifle

I have a New Trued remington M700 SA (SPS) , New Krieger 5R barrel 1:10 varminter which can be cut, crowned and threaded by Phoenix Custom Rifles.

I have a Like New Trued Remington M700 SA (LTR) with a Krieger 1:12 tight bore in medium palma (similar to varminter) with 20 runds down it and a PTG oversized lug. All work was done by AZ Precision/Phopenix Custom Rifles.

I have several stocks which either set up can be bedded into such as
-New McMillan A3 light fill, fixed w/ Badger M5 bottom metal
- used H-S Precision Pro Series W/ Vertical grip or standard palm swell as well as a LTR take off stock.
-Used AICS 1.0 in black

Feel free to give me shout any time if interested.

Re: Looking to Build a 18.5" rifle

I had a stock 5R cut down to 18.5" and threaded. Sweet little gun, consistent 1/2 MOA shooter. I traded it to get into my current semi-auto, but I hope to have another just like it someday. I may end up buying the new 20" 5R and calling it good.

Re: Looking to Build a 18.5" rifle

The rifle pictured was a stock 5R, cut and threaded at 18.5" by AWC. Karsten cheekpiece with Eagle stock pack, TIS quick-Cuff sling, Warne 20 MOA base, Seekins Low 34mm rings, S&B 3-12X50 and a Harris S 6-9" with Pod-loc. Later I added an HS detachable mag system and a Seekins SRS rail so I could use my Atlas bipod.
It's not the greatest picture but this is just before I got rid of it, with an AWC ThunderTrap on it.

Re: Looking to Build a 18.5" rifle

I bought a 5r stock as a take-off. The action was origunally a 243 BDL. I think this is now it's 4th different caliber.
Rock Creek barrel. Chambered it myself. I made the brake/suppressor adapter, and duracoated it.
This is my truck and deer blind rifle. I built it short and stout to be go well with the suppressor (which I should have used. My left ear is still ringing from shooting that thing in the blind 2 days ago).
