I just came off the range yesterday and put 9 rounds in 1.5" at 100 with each 3 round group having a hole in hole. Moved out to 200 and my group went to 5"s. My question is whether the accuracy would increase at longer ranges w/ a JP trigger vs the factory setup? My goal is to consistently shoot at 500 to 700. Using a 6x24x50 Vortex PST so optics are not the problem.

Thanks

Re: LR-308 Trigger Upgrade?

I put a Timney 4lb trigger in both my S&W 15 Sport and in my new LR 308 and it does make a difference for me. On the Sport I get 3 shot groups with the holes touching each other at 100 yards. The stock trigger was well over 9lbs.

I haven't really tried for accuracy with the LR 308 but put 60 rounds down range last week and got the last 20 rounds into a 4" X 4.5" area at 100 yards. I know this isn't great but like I said I was just trying to get rounds down range. Once the barrel wears in it should do 3 - 5 shot groups in 1 MOA or better at 100 yards. I did get two 3 shot groups into about 1.5 MOA at 100 yards. Not bad for a 64 year old that hasn't fired a 308 since basic training in 1967.

I tried a Wilson 4lb trigger in my LR 308 but it wouldn't work correctly. On safe when you pulled the trigger it would trip it. When you took it off safe it would let the hammer slam forward all the way. Took it to Rainier Arms where I bought the trigger and their smith couldn't get it to work either so they let me swap it for the Timney. It was a shame because the Wilson was a nice trigger assembly.

Re: LR-308 Trigger Upgrade?

The trigger on my LR-308 is not great either. It pulls at around 6.75 lbs according to my trigger pull gauge. I am looking forward to installing a SR Gold trigger in a few weeks. I expect groups to improve...

Re: LR-308 Trigger Upgrade?

I set a Jard trigger in my LR-308 set at 8oz.! I makes a huge difference in accuracy! Especially shooting F-Class matches.

I have a JP trigger in my long range LR6.5. It's really nice. Nicer than the standard trigger in my LR308.

Now, it seems like if you're shooting 1.5" at 100, then it should be 3" at 200. Perhaps the ammunition is worth looking at? Try something different. Seems like some report having better luck using 175's or 168's...yet others get their best performance with 150's.

Re: LR-308 Trigger Upgrade?

Well, to hell w/ waiting, bought a JP trigger basic kit. Advertise spring weight of 3-3.5. Unfortunately won't be here before tomorrow since I'm going to the ranger in the afternoon.

As for the ammo, I'm reloading 20 rounds of military brass w/ 42.8 grns of H4895 for 2685fps and nosler 165 grn ballistic tips, and 20 rounds same brass, with 43.5 grns of Varget at 2690 using the same bullet.

I"m attributing the rotten group to the overtravel and weight of pulling that factory trigger back. Barrel is a 24" flutted bull w/ a Miculek brake at 1/10 twist.

Anyway, going to re-chrono the 1st 3 rounds of each powder and then move over to the 300 and see what groups I get there.

I'll update the results after the trigger comes and I go back to that 200yard.

Re: LR-308 Trigger Upgrade?

Well the trigger's in and working as expected. Eliminated the overtravel and reduced the trigger pull weight. I put in the yellow springs and disregarded the recommendation to put in the red hammer spring. I figuare the trigger pull weight is around 3.5 to 4#'s. I'm satisfied w/ the upgrade, and from my point of view, accuracy went up as well. Shot 2 groups at 514yrds and both ended up at 5"s. On a side note, going to bring the muzzel velocity down to 2600fps from 2700 and see what that will do for closing the groups.

Regards,

Re: LR-308 Trigger Upgrade?

I am also a big fan of the Gold. Those things are money in the friggin bank.

"Accurate triggers"....A trigger wont make your gun more accurate but, when combined with the trigger puller, it is easier to shoot more accurate/consistently by providing an interface that is less disruptive.

Re: LR-308 Trigger Upgrade?

My DPMS lower runs a Geisselle SSA. It is awesome and durable (spent 3 days banging around 700 rnds of 7.62 out to 650+ meters in the field with no problems). Worth every penny, IMHO.

Re: LR-308 Trigger Upgrade?

Thanks all for the replys. I went w/ the JP trigger. After settling in, the trigger has a 3.8# pull and 1/8 trigger creep. The $120 spent was well worth the money and reflects in the better shooting groups.
