m1a build recommendations

Yeah Yeah but if the SHTF here it will be big and bloody, I can see the potential. Either way we are off topic, I woke up this morning, and installed the Tin gas plunger and the NM rod on my M1A, you guys got me thinking about getting a NM barrel or a heavy barrel installed as well as restocking the gun with something a little more robust than the plastic that it came with. Any suggestions on stocks?

Your first post indicated that you wanted a shorter barrel, so still assuming there. If not disregard.

You're going to be replacing a bunch of parts anyway, so those are built in to your price calculations on the build whatever you decide( stock, welded gas cylinder, forged op rod). If you decide to change the barrel, return the SA standard to factory condition and sell it; start fresh with an LRB barreled action because the gunsmith is gonna charge for changing and headspacing the new barrel, and that's money better spent elsewhere. Go with the M25 with 18.5 med barrel and slap it into a VLTOR stock or JAE-100(no bedding).

VLTOR(all the benefits of the Sage and JAE, less weight) http://www.desertwarriorproducts.com/vltor_stock.html

This assumes that you want to avoid getting your hands dirty, but if you want to screw with modeling clay and devcon then by all means grab a stock from Mcmillian.

I like the M3A...

If you decide to bed, pick up a battered GI fiberglass stock to practice with( Numrich has them for $12) http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Products/1050690.htm

If you just want a straight DMR go with a LRB M14 action with medium/heavy barrel and bolt it into a Troy. If going with the Troy, a regular action(like you have now) is the way to go. ANYTHING else go with the LRB M25 receiver. The dovetail mount on the M25s make optics mounting a cinch.

The Troy mounts by first disassembling the rear sights after striping the action down. The action then bolts in using the rear sight ears, the side mount hole. You mount everything on the picatinny rail up top.
