Rifle Scopes Magnetic Boresighter- USO Question

I have a USO boresghter I got from John at USO back in the day when buying a few scopes. Never used it. Question though, since its magnetic, how do I ensure its at the correct height, level etc. Seems like it is easy to place on the barrel offset, crooked or high / low without a spud to lacate it.

Mine has a circle in the middle of the magnet. I center the muzzle in the circle. I look through the scope and turn the bore sighter to align the vertical lines. I adjust the scope to the center of the bore sighter. This should get you on paper at 100 yards. Ive noticed on the rifles used this on my zero is 2 or 3 grid squares from the center.
