I live in beautiful North Carolina....love most everything about the state, except this.........
I have been a ccw permit holder for years. I can legally carry a weapon, concealed. I can carry , say, a Glock G17 with 18 rounds of 9mm, but I can't carry an auto knife !!!!!
What is the reasoning behind that law? I can shoot alot of "stuff" in less than 3 seconds, but I can't carry a Microtech ? Stupid !!!

It's a product of 1950s paranoia and enacting laws "for the children." Greasers/hoodlums back then were always depicted, Fonz-style, as running around with DA hairstyles, leather jackets, engineer boots, and invariably switchblades and brass knuckles. They themselves had picked up on it from the first of the returning GIs who didn't find an easy re-entry into civilian life after four and five years in and had joined MCs. Parents were terrified at the prospect of a youthful destruction of the burgeoning stereotypically "square" 1950s lifestyle, especially after Hollywood latched onto it.

You're sentiments are right on, here in your neighboring state of TN, we too, had these stupid laws, but we've finally got them changed. As of 1July2014, you can carry an automatic knife of any length, as long as you are not a felon, prohibited by the courts etc.. In short, any law abiding citizen can not purchase and carry an Automatic Knife. This law was really supported by the Tennessee Gun Owners Association, and others, such as Smokey Mountain Knife Works. I hope you'll be able to get the same in NC.

In Utah if you have a CCW you can carry "any weapon". Utah is a great place that bucks the trend of many "backwards" states. Utah is one of only a few states (7 or 9 I think) that you can own a full on straight from the casino slot machine or video poker machine even though gambling of ANY kind is absolutely against the law.

In Florida, your concealed weapons permit allows you to carry a knife also since it is not just a concealed gun permit.

Do an internal risk assesment.

If it ever gets to the point LEO is searching you or arresting you, then an auto knife will be the least of your problems.

Act accordingly

Doesn't answer the question. I am a 54 year old, law abiding, ccw permit holder that can legally carry an automatic handgun but not an automatic knife. I'm not going to risk my ccw permit by carrying an auto OTF knife, even tho' the chance of needing it are slim to none. The law just doesn't make sense to me.
Besides, as common as "mistakes" are made now days, who knows if/when/why I may ever be "searched" by a LEO for a mistake on his/her part, mistaken identity, etc..

For those living in a free state, shop around for automatic knives, the price for the same item, from vendor to vendor HAVE HUGE variations in price! It appears those guys that, "only sell to police and military" have huge mark ups, I'm guessing it is because departments are purchasing from these guys (old buddies to be sure) as the individual officer isn't coming out of pocket-he just signs for it.

Well, I've written a bunch of the Reps. and not one has replied. Wow, there's a shock. They got in office and don't care to answer questions from John Q. Public.

Wait about a month and you'll get a somewhat generic letter from the staff. Likely some unpaid intern hired to answer these things for the honorable whatsizname.
