I got some 243 lapua brass for christmas. I and going to make it in to 260. I have never necked up or down before. Do I just lube the inside of the neck and run in over the expander ball or should I just grade my expander ball to a carbide one or a tapered expander ball?

Also I need to buy some bushings for my dies. What is the diameter or 243 lapua brass necked up to 260 and has a nosler CC 140 in it?

Thanks

Re: making 260 brass and bushing dia

First off, do you have 260 dies in hand. If the size die is a full-length size die, you will also need to lube the outside of the case as well as the inside of the neck.

Tapered expanders work better for necking up. They seem to allow for a smoother transition and less force is needed on the press.

Do you have the bullets in hand. If you have the 260 dies with regular expander ball, just run a 243 over it, seat one of your nosler 140s and measure. Then order a tapered expander if you think you need it.

It would help if I knew exactly what dies you have and what you need to order. Sounds like your dies are bushing dies, but made by who and what type. A little more information and you'll get a little more help.

Re: making 260 brass and bushing dia

Unless you want to neck turn your Lapua brass I suggest you sell it and buy some Winchester 7-08 brass, Redding Type S FL die with a .290 bushing, necking up Lapua 243 will create a major donut, where necking down 7-08 won't

Read this if you don't beleave me about donuts, look at the picture on the bottom

Re: making 260 brass and bushing dia

This is pretty convenient. Ive been tossing the idea around of re-barreling a rifle to .260 Rem and have a boat load of .308 brass.

What equipment is needed to make .260 Rem brass from .308 Win brass?

Does anyone know of a link or site that explains the process? Ive never jumped into the self manufacture of brass before and am pretty green at that process.

Re: making 260 brass and bushing dia

I have the 243 brass, bullets and micrometer seater die but no fl die. was going to order die and bushing at same time with a tapered or carbide ball as well. So if using 243 brass will generate donuts should I ream them or neck turn them?

Either will take care of the problem. Inside neck reaming is fairly straight forward while neck turning can be rather involved....... Either way always test your once fired brass before you resize by seeing if a bullet will slip in the neck.
