Thinking about a March 5x42x56 highmaster
Own a Atcar NF and leica prs both great glass and each fits well in the intended sport. Wanted to try the March but dont know if I would be happier just to buy one of the above I already own. NF little big and heavy, Leica short kinda light just as nice of glass, NF rectical somewhat thick but very useful.

Tell me your likes of the March high master??

I had one with me at the range yesterday at the 1000yard match. I installed it on a tripod to examine the target line and get a feel for the riflescope and compare it to others.

The very first impression you get is that the picture is huge. At the same power, 40X, I can see three targets in the scope at 1000 yards with my current riflescope, a March-X 10-60X56 HM . I was seeing a little over 4 targets wide at 40X with the 5-42X56 HM. The glass is the same and the picture was perfect, but it was like going to an IMAX movie. When I went back to my 10-60X56, it was like looking through a tunnel.

My Nf glass is on par with any other nf I have looked thur, nothing that really stands out like my Swarovski spotting glass. That's why I ask about March . I would expect something better than NF for the price point. Hell my leica glass is hands down nicer than NF at less cost.

I got my March HM 5-42x56 today!

First thing I did was look it over and check out the controls, oh yeah, what's not to like??, typical March quality. Wasn't expecting otherwise.
Not too long or heavy either!

Mounted it up and leveled it. Then I sat on a bench looking through it into the forest service focusing on pine needles at different distances. Nice, but I hadn't peered through my S&B 5-25x56 in a side by side, both scopes on 25X, until 20 minutes later, and when I did that's when the revelation came! The March is significantly more contrasty, I can see details easier . It appears brighter and has a more crisp image quality. Earth shattering no, pleasantly surprising, YES, and this is half the reason I bought this scope. I got to thinking, man, I bet this thing is simply amazing to someone with good eyes.
The other thing is the FOV is noticeably wider, that is probably what makes looking through the March such a revelation.

Not much else to say other than to mention the other particular attributes I bought the scope for. That'd be that it focuses down to 10Y on 42x (I shoot Field Target air rifle so this is important) and I like the FML TR1 because it's an ALL .2 mil based reticle.

I do also like the switch that locks the turrets vs the pull up and push down system on most other scopes. The wide spacing of the .1 mil clicks is a plus too, as well as how the turrets feel and line up with the mark on the housing.

I like it, can you tell?!

^^^ Thanks for sharing Steve. When I reviewed the scope I had the Schmid 5-45x56 to compare but do not have much experience with the 5-25 other than looking through other shooters scopes from time to time. The Schmidt's always impressed but my conclusions were similar to yours with regard to the contrast - edges, detail, just seems to stand out a bit more. I will be curious to hear how you like the scope after getting to use it in some of your air rifle matches and how well it performs in those situations.

You're welcome WJM.

I'll be leaving for an air rifle match in a few days called the Textreme in Waco. Hopefully there will be a few other nice scopes there that I can compare to. BTW I mounted this scope on a $4000 pcp, it's a prototype PCP owned by Mike Niksch it's creator, this rifle has the highest scores in 50Y and 100Y BR on AGN forum. A few days ago I shot a 5 shot group at 100Y that was .3" and all in the 10 ring! It's an amazing gun.

I noticed in the last few months that 22 caliber holes need to be hunted for sometimes at 100Y. One of the targets we use has a red 8 ring and it's hard to see where holes are when they land in the red. In black it gets worse. Granted I was using mid grade scopes but the March's 42X and great glass will certainly help out next time.

I can already tell that ranging distance using the side focus will be excellent for Field Target matches, blades of grass inches away from each other between 10 and 11Y required refocusing which is what's needed in FT so I can know the exact distance! Also March claims less temp sensitivity in the glass elements of this scope which is another benefit.

It's funny talking about airgun distances here on the Hide but I assure everyone that this March tactical scope will end up on my expensive 22rf or my equally nice Mausingfield 6mmBR. And if I like it enough I'll sell my remaining S&B's to by more HM 5-42's!

Yeah I'll get back on here with any thoughts I might have pro or con.

I am glad you like my reticle. Let me know how it does for you.

I have one of these scopes at home to do a full review on when I return (work travel at the moment).

I think this scope is a solid step forward for March in many ways.
