I just recently picked up a USED Marlin 917 in .17HMR.
I already have a Glenfield/Marlin Model 25 in .22lr for comparison.
When I go to close the bolt, it feels as if the cocking piece is displaced from the notch in the bolt. It "clicks" into place then stops halfway until I apply further pressure to engage the receiver with the bolt.
It also feels this way when when I open the action when the firing pin is cocked. The only time it does not do this is after the marlin is fired. On the upstroke, it just moves in a single upward stroke if the firing pin is uncocked. If I were to swing the bolt up on a cocked firing pin, it will stop halfway up until I apply more pressure until it reaches its maximum upward stroke, then pull back.
Is this normal? Is it a problem? Is there a way to fix it? Does it just need to be broken in? It has had about 150 shots through it.
My model 25 is just 1 smooth action. It displaces the cocking piece and the bolt engages the receiver at the same time so there isn't this 2x jerking motion like the 917.
