I would like to know the differences in 416 stainless steel and the chrome moly match barrels. I understand that both are great for barrels, (but I also understand that temperatures below zero degrees Fahrenheit are NOT good for the 416 stainless). If anyone knows the advantages and disadvantages of the two, I would appreciate it.

Re: Match Barrels

Chrome Moly:
Advantage: cheaper
Disadvantage: shorter life, rusts, more maintenance

416 SS:
Advantage: longer barrel life, doesn't rust as easily and thus less maintenance
Disadvantage: cost more, more likely to shift POI (especially if not stress relieved) when hot

Re: Match Barrels

Can't give you an exact threshold number. I do things by touch. When the barrel feels towards the hotter side of warm, barrel whip starts to increase.

That when you got to slow down and let it cool. This effect is especially pronounce on thinner contour barrels like sporters.
