Maybe premature, but I'm excited!!!

So, after much lurking in here, I've decided to have Score High build a rifle for me. I spoke with Charley on the phone, he had a painless and informative conversation with me, and in a few days I sent him my check for downpayment.

He is building the "Paladin" for me in .300WM. I couldn't find ONE SINGLE complaint anywhere about his work. I know there are many good rifle makers out there. I read about them in this forum as well. To the other makeers, you weren't lacking anything from my perpsective, I just had a "gut feeling" about Charley(in a good way obviously!)

I wish I could buy a rifle from each of the fine makers that post on here, but I can't. Last year was shotgun year, and boy that was fun.

Anyway, so I decided on a 26" barrel OAL INCLUDING the Score-Hi muzzle brake. Everything else, pretty much what he has on his website description. I'll be mounting a Vortex PST 6-24 FFP when they do come in. Vortex is local to me, so I'd like to support them. The other cool thing is Brux barrels are about 40 minutes from me, and that is what Charley uses.

Sorry I'm rambling, I'm just excited. I'll post pics of the rifle and my groups when it comes in.

That's all.

My shooting buddy has an FCP-K (the one with the brake) and it sucks shooting next to him, especially prone on dirt.

Glock45,

YOU aint gonna hear NO difference in noise from BEHIND that 300WM. Don't listen to the haters!

You also will get used to shooting next to braked rifles. It aint as bad as people gripe about. If the person next to you don't like it, squeeze another one off, and give him the ole "no habla englais" look.

If you are shooting with a brake, you will absolutely love it. If you are shooting next to a guy with a brake, you will hate him lol. At the amount of recoil it reduces, you will really enjoy shooting with one. Anyways, you should have on hearing protection in the first place in which noise shouldn't be an issue, and if you are shooting without hearing protection noise still won't be an issue on account of you being deaf.

This is funny stuff! I do find it SOOoooo incredible how different brakes change the direction of sound, pitch of sound, amplification(perceived at least) of sound.

I've shot next to, and shot 338LM with comps. Behind - no biggie. Next to, I actually just laugh because I'm out there for fun, so I know my friend is just doing it to be obnoxious. At a $1.50-$2/rd(reloads) the joke is actually on him.

Another friend has a Browning A-bolt in 300WM with the BOSS, and I thought that shot mildly. I'm very excited to shoot Charley's brake on a 300WM.

For now I just wanted a common caliber. If I can learn this rifle and how to reload, how to interpret data, then I will try and get a rifle in a more custom caliber of the 6 or 6.5 mm realm that slice the air a bit more efficiently.

Thanks for the laughs and kind words! Hell, even the unkind words for that matter, it's all fun!

Let me know when it's ready. Since I'm right here in ABQ and know Charley fairly well, I'll be happy to take it out and test fire it for you

It will always vary based on the company and the amount of business they CURRENTLY have at the time of the build. You're best off getting a quote on time straight from the builders themselves

Jesse

This is a good point, it could be a while especially if you didn't supply the parts yourself. What stock are you running on this bad boy? If McM you learn the virtue of patience lol. I supplied every part for my build before and I am in my 6th month, but waiting will only make shooting the thing that much sweeter. It makes me excited to see people like yourself and myself doing builds. Happy shooting

Re: Maybe premature, but I'm excited!!!

Sounds like a nice build.

IMO braked .300 winmags are the way to go. They arent retina detachers without brakes, but its just more comfortable.

I wear ear protection at all times, brake or no brake so i dont really care... and i care more about my shoulders than I do about the potential guy next to me having a sook because he cant avoid flinching.

Enjoy her when she is finished

Re: Maybe premature, but I'm excited!!!

I've got a friend with a .300wm that used to have the badger brake on it. he saved up and bought a suppressor for it and its's unreal to shoot now. He never shoots it without it

Re: Maybe premature, but I'm excited!!!

A valid question about waiting period/length of build, I tell ya what I did.

I sent my confirmation letter to Charley with my downpayment. I wrote to him that I trust he is professional enough to get my work done with the best balance of timeliness, craftsmanship and professionalism. If I didn't think he had either, I wouldn't give him $3500+ of my money. I told him I was NOT going to call/email him "Is it done yet? Is it done yet?"

I used to work as a Harley wrench at a dealership. Let me tell you, the pestering types seemed to get a "delay" for their work, and the patient customers that knew better seemed to get their bikes a couple days earlier than expected. ALL work was done to perfection, just I had plenty of grease I DIDN'T care to use for the squeaky wheel. hehehe

I supplied Charley NOTHING. Yep, the McM A5 with his adjustable hardware. It take 4-5 months, cool. It takes 8 months. Alright. It takes a year . . . I'll develop an involuntary itch, but that's the way it goes, why they call it "custom." If I wanted a box gun, I'd buy a Barrett, TRG Savage, Remington model "##" mount some rings/scope and shoot within a week.

I know when this rifle finds itself to my FFL logbook, I will be freakin' taking a week off of work to go shoot!
