Having an issue where the last round of my MDT AICS mag will not feed. I can usually jam my fingers in there push it down, and it feeds, but it is ALWAYS the last round and happens around 30-40% of the time.

Anyone encountered the issue and solved it in the past?

6.5 Creed (2.720 140gr ELD-M)
Howa 1500
KRG Bravo

If you pressed the mag up from the bottom, instead of reaching in and fiddling, would it get the last round?

Point being, could it be a vertical position of the mag issue…do you have any adjustment options of that?

I feed a Weatherby Vanguard (should be the same as the 1500) in 6.5 from aics mags and I’ve never had a problem so I’m kinda guessing.

The other thing I’d suggest is looking at the mag/bullet/follower relationship while in the failed condition. Does the mag narrow at the top, like it’s been squeezed, allowing it to occasionally trap the follower just slightly low?

Are you loading really long rounds…any chance of the bullet tip dragging on the front…copper streaks on the binder plate?

I have a rifle that does something similar. The issue is the MDT magazine feed lips need to be adjusted to allow the cartridges to position about an eighth of an inch higher. But it's a polymer mag, I'm hesitant to go grinding on the mag lips for a rifle I don't compete with anyway (actually, this happens only with the .223 barrel/bolt/mag, not with the 6.5CM barrel/bolt/mag I do compete with).

Check for one of two things:
  1. Magazine release lets the magazine fall too low. With the bolt open, push straight up on the bottom rear of the mag. Does the mag rise more than a tiny fraction of an inch? If so, does the bolt close when the mag is held in that higher position, or does the bolt stop on the back of the magazine? If the bolt hits the mag, see step step 2. If not, can the mag latch be adjusted to hold the mag higher?
  2. If the mag can be pushed up but the bolt hits the mag, you probably need to adjust the feed lips to position the cartridges a bit higher. Metal feed lips can be bent; several outfits sell tools to do so.
Good luck.
