Thinking about a .284 or 7mm SAUM build in the future. Short actions really seem to limit these cartridges w/ 180+ gr pills, but I am not willing to go to a full long action. Is there a way to make a 591 action a 'medium' action with some milling? I know Defiance makes some Medium actions proper, but I haven't found the real difference. Thoughts on best options? It seems the longest magazine option is alpha type 2, is this correct?

I'm no expert, but some Yugo Mauser actions are intermediate length, but I highly doubt that's the action your wanting to use as a platform.

You might give Jerry Stiller a call. I know he is in the process of producing a medium action for the wsm crowd. I have seen the action in person and it looks nice.

The Win70/FN SPR will accommodate, without mods, the longest cartridge you can fit in an Alpha mag, which is 2.950".
If you trim the bolt stop a bit, theyll feed/extract a 3.050" cartridge.
Seekins bottom metal and magazines will maximize your COAL capabilities.
