Ok so Im stuck between a rock and a hard place with this. My local shop only carries Spikes ***Color Filled*** stripped lowers for $99. I have wanted a spikes lower for a while due to hearing good things about their lowers.

but how are mega lower recievers? My buddy has a mega lower under a BCM upper. Im looking to get the same exact BCM upper and now might be getting the same exact lower.. Kinda feel like Im trying to build a copy of his rifle this way.. But it too is also $99 at my local shop. But comes in flat black..

So since Im against both of my options.. Which lower is better or worse if any difference?? If they are the same then Im just going to go with the mega due to th spikes color fill.. If the spikes is better than Ill still have to think about going with the color fill... If it makes a difference this is for a ar 15 M4 build.

Re: Mega Lower vs. Spikes Lower

Ok I just found out I can order a spikes lower from spikes in FL for $99 shipped total is $121

Is it better to go mega or spikes??

Re: Mega Lower vs. Spikes Lower

I have both and they are both good lowers. I'd have to say the Mega is probably a little better quality wise, but Spikes is decent too. The one thing I liked about the Spikes is that mine already had the rear take down pin cavity tapped for a captive screw to keep the spring in place when removing the butt stock.

Re: Mega Lower vs. Spikes Lower

MMS makes Mega's lowers. I believe they also used to make Spike's. I think Spike's are now made by LAR. They will be pretty similar. I'm not sure why Spikes made the transition from MMS to LAR, but I'm sure it had to do with $$$, not quality control. I personally like LMT. I'm doing a similar project with LMT and BCM.
As far as I know, there are 4 manufacturers that make about 90% of the lowers out there (MMS, LAR, LMT and CMT) the other companies will brand them and sell them at various prices. They are all very similar.
The most noticeable difference in lowers is when you start looking really cheap polymer lowers or at billet lowers like POF or Sun Devil.

Re: Mega Lower vs. Spikes Lower

Pick the one with the roll mark you like better and be done with it! This is more or less true with ALL FORGED LOWERS on the market today with only around 4 or so manufacturers making the forgings for the dozens and dozens of mfgs the sell "their brand."

I have personally used both Spikes Tactical and Mega receivers in the past and they are both high quality lowers that will serve you well. Having done business directly with the fine people at Spikes, I can speak to the high quality of the people working there, their commitment to customer satisfaction and the generally high quality of all the products they sell (whether under their name/logo or otherwise). I'd buy the Spikes lower based on my own personal experiences with the company and its people, but don't take that as any knock against Mega whatsoever.

Re: Mega Lower vs. Spikes Lower

Honestly, they're pretty much all the same these days and everyone gets them from the same source, then puts their logo on it. I have spikes and about 6 Mega "zombie edition" lowers. They're no different, except for a spider on one and an atom on the other. If you like the spider, go with that. Atom? Go there.

The only thing I care about is the LPK, so just make sure you buy a good one. I also use the red wedges to get a tight upper/lower fit. Yes, I still believe they work.

Re: Mega Lower vs. Spikes Lower

making sure the upper and lower fit properly is my 1st concern--
my Mega lower is a billet as is my POF and Sun Devil--have many uppers but always pick one out that fits well--you'd be suprised
at the differences in fit with "mil-spec" receivers--Mega and Spikes are both decent brands

Re: Mega Lower vs. Spikes Lower

I got both. I tend to favor the Mega receivers. If, however you are purchasing your lowers sight-unseen, get the distributor/seller to check magwell tolerances. See if magazines drop free before committing to the purchase.
My 2 cents.

I couldn't disagree more. Within the same manufacturer (Mega), I had lowers that fit more snuggly with uppers than others. So a "proper" fit is a strange term to use. Proper means that the rifle functions and there is not too much play in tolerances between upper and lower. Ideal is no play. You'll never get ideal, unless they're fitted together or you use an acu wedge like I mentioned. The tightness of the fit still doesn't make a big difference in accuracy. In fact, my Colt Elite 24" SS model will shoot 1/4" groups with the wedge and without.

That Colt lower is also one of the tighter lower receivers I have and it has a great fit will all of my uppers. The older "preban" lowers I have are looser, especially my Sendra. A wedge turns it into a tight gun.

Almost every popular AR15 manufacturer is producing good lowers. It REALLY boils down to what you prefer. Billet, cast, whatever, they pretty much all function the same if the holes are in the correct spots and you do your part.
