I saw on the MATEN website their quote "• Priced lower than most competitor’s forged sets." And that made me think that the MATEN must be forged but since they did not explicitly say that, I sent them a note and asked them. After two queries, they did finally explicitly state that the MATEN is not forged. However, their definition of "forged" differs from my understanding. Their description of "forged" is what I would describe as machining a cast part. I have pasted their e-mail below. Does this sound right to you?

Scott,

We have two different ways we manufacture our parts, either out of billet
material (which is a solid block of metal that is cut into the piece) or out
of forged material (metal that has been melted and then poured into a mold
and then cut into the piece). Our Maten product is NOT forged, it is a
billet product.

Thanks,

Tam

Re: Mega MATEN forged upper and lower?

As Tam stated, the MATEN sets are billet. This means they are machined out of a solid block.

However, Tam is incorrect about the forging. In forging the metal is smashed into a blank, then machined from that shape.

I don't believe the strength difference in our application matters one bit.

What Tam is referring to a "cast" receiver where molten metal is poured/injected into a mold. Cast can be considerably weaker than the other processes.

Re: Mega MATEN forged upper and lower?

Yes, I completely agree with the posts above. Clearly the answer is that these are not forged components. However, I would like to reinforce two things with Mega. 1) Since your upper/lower are not forged, don't advertise something like, "these are less expensive the competitors forged sets". In my opinion, this is too close to false advertising. 2) When your customers go to the trouble to reach out to you about something that is important to them about the products you manufacture, please make sure they get accurate information from knowledgable staff. I now feel like I can't trust information they share with me about their product which is really a disappointment to me as the MATEN is at the very top of my list and I have been trying to work through some questions on my build.

i agree for all i hear about mega their cs should be really good, i hear nothing but praise for their products and that usually follows good customer base with good cs.

Not sure if this will help but I do know that Mega offers forged receivers and billet ones as well. Maybe thats the prices they were referring to?
