After nearly three years of abstinence from competition and precision shooting, I intend to get back into shooting in 2018-2019. My old trusty AX 260 barrels is about toast, throwing shots >MOA at 300. I'm considering retiring the girth AX for competition altogether and building a lighter, better handling rifle.

That brings me to the consideration. What cartridge do I want? I want to go back to a 6mm round. Specifically, I'm looking at 6mm Creed and 6-6.5x47 Lapua.

Having shot 6.5x47 for several years, the cartridge is familiar and it seems the jump over to a 6mm version should be easy. It seems the brass lasts forever though at a premium priced over the now-standardized 6mm Creed with affordable brass.

Is there any reason to go with the Lapua parent case over the Hornady? What are realistic velocities achievable with both rounds?

I'm thinking heavily about building said rifle on Tikka's T3X and building a sister rifle in .223 Rem or .223 AI for practice and to shoot some F-class with. I'm looking forward to getting back in shooting shape and getting back into the game after such a hiatus.

Thanks for any insight you may provide.

3100 fps is normal for a 26" barrel with the 6x47 and a 105 grainer. Right now I'm getting 3172 fps with a 28". It's the little cartridge that's hard to beat as an all around 6mm, accurate, powerful, uses less powder, great brass life. R17 really makes the 6x47 scream, just add 75-100 fps at similar pressures. I'm coming up on 35 firings with few signs of the brass giving up anytime soon but I have my own reamer, custom dies and I anneal often.

You could probably get more fps with 6 Creed and have good brass life if using the new Lapua brass and enjoy both those attributes, or get the same velocity with less pressure.

Certainly take a look at the new 6mm 110gr SMK. Top notch projectile in all categories.

Would do any of the 30* (or steeper) shouldered cartridges, including the 6 Dasher (especially if barrel life is a major concern).

Also, powder choices have improved. Lots of folks getting great results with RL26 (yes 26!) in these medium 6mm cartridges.

    best of luck

Have you considered the 6mm XC?

Actually, I am also considering the 6mmXC. I hadn't realized Norma brass was so plentiful and inexpensive for it as when I had last looked into it. I am actually leaning that way more so now.

    I just got into 6 x 47 L.
Necking down 6.5 brass was a breeze. I accidentally bought a FL bushing die, and I figured the cases would not chamber because bushing dies leave a little bit of the neck unsized, but they chambered fine. I got the right bushing first try based on the recommendation of a Hide member, too. It all came together easily and I can understand the reports of cases lasting over 20 firings. Still working on fine tuning ammo but accuracy and SD looking very good.

My vote goes to the 6 Creedmoor in my comp set up been shooting it for 3+ yrs now 3100 w105's in a 26" no fuss just load and go, have 12 cycles on my Hornady brass and at the price if I loose any no loss. The 47 Lapua's are fine as well just don't get hung up in the Lapua brass hype, I've had plenty of crap from Lapua over the yrs. I also run Dashers and BR's and the are great cartridges as well but the fuss with FF is a bummer. All the cartridges listed are accurate and reliable but I'll stick with my 6 Creedmoor it's just got to much going for it for me to change. Good luck with your choice, I know you will choose wisely

It’s been a crazy year since I started this thread. I still haven’t rebarreled. However, I’ve decided to build a new rifle from that ground up. I’m going to go with a 6mm Creedmoor on a custom action. I’ve already started ordering gear such as brass, dies, and a barrel vice. I suppose the SRP brass sealed the deal.

Thank you for all the replies.

IMHO the 6x47 is "cooler" and gives you slightly more "range credit" than the 6 creed. But there is little practical difference between the two with the Lapua small primer brass for both cartridges.
