I did a search and didn't find this mentioned. I'm looking at this case for my Ruger RPR. Anyone have any experience with it? It will pretty much be used for storage, range trips and classes. My rifle comes in at 44" so I'm hoping at an angle it will fit in the 42" case. If not, I'll just fold the stock. The 50" case will not fit in my trunk.

Or would I be better off with getting a simple soft case and dedicated mat either something from midway or triad tactical?

Blackhawk stawker mat. There's nothing inherently wrong about it; it's just that the whole concept is a compromise. It's inconvenient to use as a case, and it's a little too small to really be a good mat. It's cheaper than buying a drag bag and a mat, which is the main benefit.

I tried a few combo products 10+ years ago. The cargo is the issue. If you are carrying anything in the pouches/pockets when you unfold the case into a mat, you either have the empty the pockets or lay on your stuff.

My combo case/mat is now just a case. I didn't like the fact of the inside of the case getting dirty with sand/rocks then putting my rifle back in the case. Even after shaking it off there was still sand/dirt in the case.

Yea thats something I was also thinking about. I dont want that crap and any moisture it might pick up being held against the rifle like that. Im going to go with all your suggestions and do a simple case and dedicated mat. Any suggestions on a bag? Rifle is about 43" but can fold to 34". Rifle bag cant be any longer than 43" or it wont fit in the trunk

i dunno.....ive got a case/ mat.....pretty happy with it.

gun gets a little dusty occasionally.....but then again, its a gun, not the fucking mona lisa......never gotten dirty enough to cause problems.

is it the best shooting mat....no.......is it the best rifle case.....no..........its like a leatherman, kind of a compromise at everything.....but it makes things handier.

the backpack straps are also nice, makes it easier to carry a 15 lb rifle and still have hands free to open doors and carry handgun cases, ect.

i have no experience with the Midway pack.....but it looks like a solid unit.

Well, my comments were a little tongue-in-cheek of course but I have never been able to complete a field shooting session without a considerable amount of dirt, gravel bits, mud, sand and other gunk all over the mat by the time I'm done. It just seems it's impossible to keep myself from walking on it when changing out rifles and/or ammo, other equipment, etc, which leaves tracks of all kinds of junk on it that won't shake off. I just couldn't bring myself to put one of my precision rifles back into a case with all that. And as Triad mention, the pockets/storage areas in combo type cases become a PITA if you actually use them for their intended purpose. Of course, others have mentioned the inevitable compromise of mat verses case which IMO keeps such types of gear from performing either task well as it would otherwise. I almost always take more than one rifle to the field anyway so having one more dedicated rifle case is certainly no big deal anyway and the performance of a good dedicated mat is really appreciated.

Been using the Tac Force Stryker Mat/Case for a few years. Works fine for me. Sand and rocks and stuff can and do get in it. But I just shake it out before rolling it up with my rifle. No issues. I have a separate small backpack for all my gear. No need to store stuff in the mat.
