I have had good luck once I figured out what my .308 liked. You can do it with a .308 but you can do it with any other rifle as well, just take load development time. IMO you're better off with the .308 over the 300wm.

Re: mil spec 5r rifle

he did it off a lead sled with a leopould vx111 6.5 x 20 scope.i watched him.so if im kinda into shooting groups on paper why spend the moneyfor a 5r mil specwhen cooper is readyto roll out of the box?dont need to add nothing like ya do the remingtons, just reloads.find what the cooper likes.theyshoot out of box half inch groups at 100 yards anyways.

To answer your question:
For the range you will be shooting go with the 308. The 308, and definately the 300WM do not stabilize before 300M(308 stabilizes right at about 300). The 5R is just like any other heavy barrel Remy or Winchester or Savage. It will shoot one ragged hole at 100M when properly broken in and you do your part.
That Cooper, like any other accurate rifle must have been broken in incorrectly to only shoot 1/4" at 100M

As to HS Precision stocks, they are fine but I hold preference for either AI or McMillan

incorectly?itshot 1/2 inch around 200 yrds.three shot.hell id take that broken gun lol.any ways if i remember right it was a 243 or 6.5 creedmore single shot.in a custom classic.pricey too.the scope cost as much as the rifle.but this is rght out of the box.cant buynothing for them.i guess what im trying to say is i want something that ll shoot good,a caliber people like, and it ll hold its value later.i paid like 650 dollare for a model 202 sauer and scoped it with a 6.5x20 vx111 scope in the late80s early90s and sold it now for 2300.a 06 but its time for something else.what ya think?

Re: mil spec 5r rifle

You'll find that most scopes cost more than the (basic) rifle.

Find a rifle that shoots decent and practice, practice, practice. Don't buy into the "Tacti-cool" until you know what you want. Then build a rifle to suit your desires. My M1903 shoots almost as well as the rifle below.

Mil-Spec? Civilian-spec is just as good if you build it right.

I paid $600 for my 700VLS back in 2000, outfitted it with a McMillan M40A1 stock and a USOptics fixed 10 power scope.

Course it went through Cryo, my own smith doing his magic on it.
I'm still shooting a factory barrel too I might add..

Result - $3500 later it shoots (On a good day) as well as the target below.

But on a bad day I shoot crappy 2" groups so a high speed rifle won't matter.

This is my best target ever, but I've reproduced it a couple of times, when I practice, practice, practice....

i know,[mygrammer]but you all understand where im comeing from.please bear with me.the comp keyis worn to where it wont seperate the spacebetween letters sometimes.maybe i should get a new comp before a new rifle, uuuuuum nope lol

Re: mil spec 5r rifle

Oh we're up to 10 round groups now?

I don't even SHOOT groups anymore, complete waste of ammo.

Prefer the cold bore shot in this time of economic uncertainty - I can take my rifle out, fire one shot and call it a day LOL

Re: mil spec 5r rifle

thats another thing i wanted to ask.why not just sight your scope in with one or two shots? cold barrel.let it cool down a half hour or so then two more shots.cause when you shoot 3 or 5 shots the first two bullet holes are cutting each other and then the others are off a half inch.i mean you dont shoot a deer with a warm barrel.seems like when the barrel heats up after three shots it starts walking some.you can always gettwo holes to touch but then the others are off a little.never a one ragged hole.im talking about stock rifles

That'd have been fun (-nier), but I don't think that's the case.
