You'll find that most scopes cost more than the (basic) rifle.
Find a rifle that shoots decent and practice, practice, practice. Don't buy into the "Tacti-cool" until you know what you want. Then build a rifle to suit your desires. My M1903 shoots almost as well as the rifle below.
Mil-Spec? Civilian-spec is just as good if you build it right.
I paid $600 for my 700VLS back in 2000, outfitted it with a McMillan M40A1 stock and a USOptics fixed 10 power scope.
Course it went through Cryo, my own smith doing his magic on it.
I'm still shooting a factory barrel too I might add..
Result - $3500 later it shoots (On a good day) as well as the target below.
But on a bad day I shoot crappy 2" groups so a high speed rifle won't matter.
This is my best target ever, but I've reproduced it a couple of times, when I practice,practice, practice....
