I just discovered that I have 10 boxes of Blackhill moly-coated 308 (168 and 175 gr) tucked away in an ammo can. I believe I bought them 7-8 years ago. I vaguely remember that it was hotly debate whether moly coating was good or bad for the barrel. Before I shot them in my rifles, I would like to find out what's the scoop. Anyone can help?

Shoot them. Clean as usual...maybe with some mild abrasive...Rem Clean or such...then go back to ruining your barrel faster. (Ho ho ho.) I use HxBN interchangeably with Moly. Clean every 300 to 1000 rounds (guilt trip) as needed. JMHO

Actually, Simple Green cleans out moly fairly well.
I shoot moly coated bullets in my high count p-dog/groundhog rifles. And I clean every 150 rounds or so. Like 'former naval person', mostly its a guilt trip 'cause accuracy is still there.
But I'm switching to hBN as I use up my moly coated bullets.

I read about moly coated bullets ruining the barrel after several hundred rounds (caking up the throat). I guess that's just internet legend then. Hate to waste these blackhill rounds

Unless I'm mistaken, Berger bullets has a section in their FAQ about prepping a barrel for shooting moly.

It recommended to use JB bore cleaner each time, which will raise someone's eyebrows. I have to admit that I do use JB once after several shooting session

As I disremember, the early problems with moly were mostly due to using a spray product named,"Ms Moly". It was sprayed into the bore and resulted in a heavy coating of moly and resin which did hurt grouping. Coating the bullets only leaves a microscopic coating which is not detrimental. Supposedly, however, a "ring" buildup can form in front of the chamber after a huge number of rounds which can be difficult to remove. That is one of the reasons to use HxBN instead; it doesn't build up. Besides HxBN appears cleaner, being white rather than the moly black. JMHO

STOP,,, don't shoot them, they may cause serious harm to your rifle, instead send them to me for disposal.

Just shoot them, and enjoy them. I used to shoot moly in my .223 Varmint rifle and never seen any problems.

Just shoot them, and enjoy them. I used to shoot moly in my .223 Varmint rifle and never seen any problems.

I shot the Black Hills 55 grain .223 moly ammo in my HK-630 sporter with no problems. It liked them and grouped well with that ammo. I did clean the barrel just like normal, which would be after any shooting session. I would shoot it and just make sure to clean your rifle afterward.

hey....when you do your housekeeping on the barrel....don't go ape shit trying to get the moly out......there are legions of shooters that have ruined really really good barrels....custom barrels because they believe what keyboard commandos say on the interweb

I was told to patch with Kroil now and again, let it sit, then patch dry... seems to work so far...

SMK's have only a microscopic layer of moly and therefore don't leave a lot in my rifles bore. I clean it about every 150 rounds, but don't try to get it spotless. Just give it a brushing and a few wet patches, then finish with Kroil.

My balckhill 308 moly were made sometimes between 2003-2004, so I guess they are safe
