I bought a used Shilen Select Match 243 8 twist with 19 rounds through it. Those 19 rounds were moly DTACs. Guy couldnt get it to shoot with that bullet. Is there any cleaning I need to do to deal with the moly coating. Read some stuff that says barrels shot with moly won't shoot regualr bullets very well.

Re: Moly coated question

Run a couple of patches through it with alcohol on them. Then shoot or break in like a new barrel. Don't really think you can judge a barrel with 19 rounds!

Re: Moly coated question

I figured 19 rounds was a little premature, but I had seen his posts about the difficulty he was having. It was a good deal with no wait for a almost new barrel. I probably won't use the DTACS that came with the barrel. I think I would have to push them harder than the 105s to get decent velocity and I like the AMAX terminal effect on all things furry and tasty

Re: Moly coated question

I would buy some 105 amax's or 107 smk's, non coated, and pack about 41 grains of H4350 and put those things on or .005" off the lands, do a proper break in, and evaluate in about 40 rounds. And if you like the effects of the amax's, try the vmax's!

Re: Moly coated question

Usually takes more rounds than that to coat it well. If it be true on the round count...clean and shoot it. As 2Shots says...the 105 or 107 grainers are easier to get to shoot than the DTACS. However, my 8 twist with the moly DTACS really likes 42 grains of the 4350 with the bullet touching the lands. JMHO

Re: Moly coated question

I hunt deer with 110 TAP so I know all about the VMAX. ive got a pound of IMR4350 and just bought a pound of H4350 today. 105 AMAXes arrived a couple of days ago with 50 WIN cases. Have some factory ammo left over from my last 243 so I'll see how that does. The basic Rem 100gr corelokts always amazed me how well they could shoot out of my factory barreled one. I have been looking up loads for the new barrel and I see alot of people shooting near 42gr and above with H4350. The highest book max I've seen is 40.2. I was hoping to try 37.5 as a starting point since that is listed as a accuracy load on 6mmbr.

Re: Moly coated question

Simple Green does well at taking out moly.

But I find it hard to believe a guy would give up on a bullet after only 19 rounds. How many powders did he try? Primers? Seating depths?
