Momma, bratty daughter, and I have reached a stalemate in our monopoly "cage match" this evening.

Currently all properties are owned by all 3 of us. All the houses are owned as well.

According to the rules one must develop properties evenly. Meaning you can't put 4 houses one one single property.

Likewise I can't sell all of the structures on one property. Id have to chip away at each evenly.

    Here's the riff:

I say I can sell "x" # of houses back to the bank (for $.50 on the dollar-per the rules) AND buy them back for full market value to use on another property in the effort to gain an advantage. I say I can do this all in one move/turn.

-example: say I own 6 houses distibuted evenly on 3 properties od one suit. I sell all six back for the 50% loss and buy them right back for full face value to pile up on B-walk and P-place hoping the now collasal rent forces the other players into a disadvantage. I want to do all this in one single turn.

Momma calls bullchit. She says I have to wait a turn and that the houses I sold (at the 50% loss) are up for grabs to anyone until my next turn.

I argue that my "negotiation" with the bank is on "my" terms. -meaning I am not stuck in a desparate act (like having to sell houses/property to pay another player rent)

I say she would be right if I sold to the bank and then tried to "horde" the property till I could buy it back.

Since that's not the case I say I can do the sale and be within the rules. The "official" rules are a bit vague and there's reason to argue both ways.

Serious household bragging rights are at stake here so i (we) are looking to fellow monopoly junkies for guidance.

Well house rules should be astablished before game play, and according to the rules you DO have to wait till your turn to buy or sell property with the bank, but with other players you don't have too. It doesn't stat that in the rules. I would make a pack with the daughter to drive momma off the board and tell Momma that politics are more important than rules.

This cracks me up! Monopoly on SH:).

I'm with you. I agree with your logic. You're selling to finance a buy--there's no reason I can think of in the real world were you'd have to pause before turning around and committing to another real estate purchase aside from waiting for docs. Though Vantastic makes a good point, the house rules should prolly be established beforehand.

Wouldja believe that once I played in a game at a party and I broke out all 4 other players in 20 minutes? It might have been 18 minutes. We all agreed it was 20 max. It was the most amazing demonstration of luck and coincidence we'd ever seen--roll just right, buy, collect money from folks rollin' behind me, etc., etc., etc. We don't think I hadda pay rent more than twice. I landed on Park Place and Boardwalk on the first turn with enough money in the coffers to get things rolling. Real life shoulda been so good to me...

    Re: monopoly board game question

Why not just grab a common household item and call them hotels? That way everyone can still buy more houses. Then if there is still a stalemate, knock the board over "accidentally" so everyone saves face.

    Re: monopoly board game question

This is where "house rules" are agreed upon before game-play. As it is, I suggest looking at this with the same view as the law.

"If there's no law (rule) against it, then therefore it must be legal to do so".

I say this somewhat facetiously, but I think you get the point. Now next time, if there are more/different rules established BEFORE commencing battle, then the outcome could be different.

And, if ya'll get so far into this game, then I suggest that you check out "Poleconomy" which has both business and politics and banking structure included. Then, after re-overtaking the world, you'll want to get back into the reloading den. With all you're bazillions.

    Re: monopoly board game question

I don't think the number of houses supplied in the game are a limiting factor on how many can be in use. Any token can be designated a "house" and used.

Either way, I agree with you, you should be able to buy and sell all the houses you want on any one turn if you have the cash.

    Re: monopoly board game question

Correct. We always played you could do several transactions in one turn.
My wife and I (and friends) are no longer allowed to play Monopoly. We got into the biggest argument we ever had over Monopoly. I'm very competitve, and the only way the other 3 players could beat me was to gang up on me. I took out 2 of them before I went out. There was lots of high dollar properties sold (not to me!) for pennies, which pissed me off!! I love the game, but it's not good for keeping things friendly around the household!

    Let momma win. Too easy.

    Re: monopoly board game question

I believe it's stated in 'Da Rules' that the bank cannot run out of money. It follows, then, that the bank cannot run out of real properties, either. Find something around the house to use as houses and hotels to finish the game, or feign ignorance and let momma win.

    Re: monopoly board game question

It seems to me that a handful of turns around the board even without trading in houses would eventually give somebody the win. Somebody is bound to hit every hotel on one turn around the board and go bankrupt and somebody is bound to miss a lot of properties as well.

    Re: monopoly board game question

when we play we use beer caps as extra hotels and beer can tabs for houses. we always play this way. you can do any thing you want at the start of your turn. there is no limit on the amount of houses one can own.

as per the rules you must evenly distribute the homes. you can not pile them up on one property. you must start on the lowest priced property and then move down to the most expensive property.

this is the way we play and we never fight about it
