WASHINGTON – U.S. officials say a Northwest Airlines passenger from Nigeria said he was acting on behalf of al-Qaida when he tried to blow up a flight Friday as it landed in Detroit.

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., identified the suspect as Abdul Mudallad, a Nigerian. King said the flight began in Nigeria and went through Amsterdam en route to Detroit.

One of the U.S. intelligence officials said the explosive device was a mix of powder and liquid. It failed when the passenger tried to detonate it.

The passenger was being questioned Friday evening.

Both of the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing.

The motive of the Christmas Day attack was not immediately clear.

Just as I am planning a few more flights in January. I hate driving to Florida, but damn I really hate commercial flights more and more.

I read an article that said the guy claimed Al Qaeda told him to do it. Good luck to anyone that has to travel in the next few days...THIS is why I bought my own damn plane. Might cost more, but I can leave whenever I want and carry whatever I want...

The proper way to avoid TSA.

Re: Moron tries to blow up Delta Flight

And once again a brave civilian passenger jumped the asshole and horse collared him. On the Drudge link, a young Michigan man, of middle east origin, said he was so impressed by the actions of this as yet unknown man, and a couple other brave passengers, to subdue the terrorist, it made him proud to be an American.

Additionally, it is reported there were no Air Marshalls aboard that flight.

It's up to all of us as our leadership is so wound up around the PC axle that even soldiers aren't safe on their own bases. Some rules are too stupid to follow. As such, I'll look out for my family and myself and take my chances when it somes to non magnatometer screened entrances.

    Gun free zones be damned.

Re: Moron tries to blow up Delta Flight

The TSA has a new plan:

Soon all passengers will be placed in handcuffs upon entry to the AC. Catheters will be installed into each passenger so they don't have to use a bathroom and/or leave their seat.

“Among other things,” the statement in Air Canada’s Web site read, “during the final hour of flight customers must remain seated, will not be allowed to access carry-on baggage, or have personal belongings or other items on their laps.” ...Like a terrorist couldn't do something at 1 hour and 15 minutes prior to landing, or just after takeoff!

December 27, 2009 New York Times
New Restrictions Are Imposed on Air Passengers
By MICHELINE MAYNARD and LIZ ROBBINS

In the wake of the terrorism attempt Friday on a Northwest Airlines flight, federal officials on Saturday imposed a new layer of restrictions on travelers that could lengthen lines at airports and limit the ability of international passengers to move about an airplane.

Among other steps being imposed, passengers on international flights coming to the United States will apparently have to remain in their seats for the last hour of a flight without any personal items on their laps. Overseas passengers will be restricted to only one carry-on item aboard the plane, and domestic passengers will probably face longer security lines.

The restrictions will again change the routine of air travel, which has undergone an upheaval since the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington in September 2001 and three attempts at air terrorism since then.

Just a day after the attempt on Friday, travelers at airports around the world began experiencing heightened screening in security lines. On one flight, from Newark Airport, flight attendants kept cabin lights on for the entire trip instead of dimming them for takeoff and landing.

The limits, which brought to mind some of the most stringent policies after the 2001 attacks, come at a difficult time for the airline industry.

Travel has declined about 20 percent since 2008 because of the economy, and airlines have been dealing with numerous delays the past week because of snowstorms on the East Coast and in the Midwest.

Airline industry executives said the new steps would complicate travel as vacationers return home from Christmas trips, and could also cause travelers to cancel plans for flights in 2010.

But the Homeland Security secretary, Janet Napolitano, said in a statement Saturday that passengers should proceed with their holiday plans and “as always, be observant and aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior or activity to law enforcement officials.”

The Transportation Security Administration, which governs security at airports and on airplanes in the United States, had no immediate comment on the steps.

The T.S.A. planned to add more security resources as needed on a daily basis, a person with knowledge of the agency’s plans said. The person said travelers would not experience the same thing at every airport, and that the system would be unpredictable by design.

Two foreign airlines, Air Canada and British Airways, disclosed the steps in notices on their Web sites. The airlines said the rules had been implemented by government security agencies including the T.S.A.

“Among other things,” the statement in Air Canada’s Web site read, “during the final hour of flight customers must remain seated, will not be allowed to access carry-on baggage, or have personal belongings or other items on their laps.”

The suspect in the Friday attempt, identified as Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, tried to ignite his incendiary device in the final hour of the flight while the plane was descending into Detroit.

On its Web site, American Airlines said the T.S.A. had ordered new measures for flights departing from foreign locations to the United States, including mandatory screening of all passengers at airport gates during the boarding process. All carry-on items would be screened at security checkpoints and again at boarding, the airline said. It urged passengers to leave extra time for screening and boarding.

In effect, the restrictions mean that passengers on flights of 90 minutes or less would most likely not be able to leave their seats at all, since airlines do not allow passengers to walk around the cabin while a plane is climbing to its cruising altitude.

The new restrictions began to be instituted Saturday on flights from Canada and Europe to the United States. Air Canada said it was waiving fees for the first checked bag, and it told passengers to be prepared for delays, cancellations and missed connections because of the new limits.

At airport terminals Saturday, travelers recounted the immediate differences they experienced. Though passengers arriving from Frankfurt passed speedily through United States customs at Kennedy Airport in New York, they said that in Germany the security was intensified.

“I really was surprised,” Eva Clesle said about the level of scrutiny in Frankfurt, adding that officials had inspected backpacks by opening “every single zip.”

In Rochester, one passenger waiting in a security line said she saw other passengers removed for additional screening.

The security administration, created in the wake of the September 2001 terrorist attacks, has emergency power to impose restrictions on air travel without consulting the airlines. Its steps have undergone modification in the past, however.

After the 2001 attacks, passengers bound for or leaving Reagan National Airport in Washington were not allowed to leave their seats for the first and last 30 minutes of a flight. The restriction was lifted in 2005.

Passengers still have to remove their shoes before entering screening machines, however, a step instituted at many airports and subsequently made mandatory after Richard C. Reid, the so-called shoe bomber, tried to blow up an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami in December 2001 by igniting explosives in his shoes.

Re: Moron tries to blow up Delta Flight

    What would you think if:

    1. The father, one of the most prominent bankers in the country travels to two (2) U.S. embassies to alert Americans.

    2. The Brits had already banned this son from all flights.

    3. The son buys his ticket with cash?

    4. The son has no baggage on his international flight?

    5. The son specifically chooses one of the "hot seats?"

    6. The son was already on the broadest "list."

    7. The son, a muslim, travels Xmas day from one of the countries the U.S. President is most worried about?

    8. The son's name doesn't conjure up images of Vikings or uses ten or more vowels.

    Would you?

    1. Ban people from standing up in the last hour of flight? He was sitting.

    2. Not issue blankets and pillows on international flights?

    3. Not allow people to access their carry-on bagage? He didn't.

    4. Praise the last people that screened him as "doing their job?"

Last question, if every single person on the 500,000 watch list was searched every time they got on a flight, what percent of all annual flyers would that be?

    1. Less than 3%

    2. Less than .3%?

    3. Less than .03%

    4. Less than .003%

    5. Less than .0003%

Re: Moron tries to blow up Delta Flight

Looks like a 3 prong effort:

    1) We knew about him all along and the system worked as designed,

    2) We're safer than we were with the previous admin.,

    3) The hatred motive for the attempt, successful boarding of the terrorist and concealment of the explosive, is the fault of the previous admin., for "taking his eye off the ball"...

There will be other offerings to follow.

After the succesful recasting of the Fort Hood attack as merely a criminal act, among other euphemisms proferred as gospel this year, the redefinition of the obvious into tortured double speak is well established.

Sort of a throw-everything-against-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks method of ass covering!

Re: Moron tries to blow up Delta Flight

I would bet this months paycheck there were alot of us Civie contractors on that aircraft. When I head home I hit Kuwait to Amsterdam then to either Detroit or Atlanta. There are tons of other Civie contractors and sometimes Mil members on the same flights. I would say this guy got his PeePee burnt pretty good then slapped around a bit until they hit the ground. A shame someone didn't put a real choke hold on this chump and save us some tax dollars that will be spent on some lame ass trial.

Re: Moron tries to blow up Delta Flight

FAA Considering Passenger Ban Finally the TSA has an answer that will work!! its about time.

    October 16, 2002 | Issue 38•38

WASHINGTON, DC—Seeking to address "the number-one threat to airline security," the Federal Aviation Administration announced Monday that it will consider banning passengers on all domestic and international commercial flights.

"In every single breach of security in recent years, whether it was an act of terrorism or some other form of crime, it was a passenger who subverted the safety systems on board the aircraft or in the terminal," FAA administrator Marion Blakey said. "Even threats that came in the form of explosives inside baggage were eventually traced back to a ticketed individual. As great a revenue source as they have been, passengers simply represent too great a risk to the airline industry."

Under the proposed reforms, the FAA would institute a strict ban on adult passengers, passengers 18 and under, international travelers, and domestic customers. A battery of questions and ID checks will be used to determine whether an individual is a pilot, flight attendant, or federal security officer—the only humans who will be allowed to board an aircraft flying within or headed for the U.S.

In addition, security sensors installed at all gates will sound an alarm if they detect the presence of a 98.6-degree body temperature, and airport-security workers will be trained to spot and positively identify humans in the boarding area.

"Frankly, we've tried everything else," Blakey said. "We've put up more metal detectors, searched carry-on luggage, and prohibited passengers from traveling with sharp objects. Yet passengers still somehow continue to find ways to breach security. Clearly, the passengers have to go."

If approved, the new restrictions would go into effect sometime around Thanksgiving, before the busy holiday travel season. Customers who have already purchased tickets for flights scheduled to take place after the ban's enactment will receive a voucher good for travel to their final destination by bus or train. Should such transportation prove unavailable or inadequate, passengers on most major airlines will receive either a portion of their airfare refunded or a coupon redeemable for a future flight, from which they will also be banned.

"We realize that these new regulations would, for many air travelers, be a major inconvenience," Blakey said. "But we feel strongly that it's a small price to pay to ensure the safety of our skies."

While the ban's primary purpose would be to improve security, FAA spokesman John Gemberling said it would help the airlines' economic future, as well. As evidence, he pointed to the $7.7 billion losses posted by major airlines in 2001—much of which came in the wake of Sept. 11—and the $6 billion increase in passenger-screening costs since the tragedy.

"We've been stretched as thin as we can go," Gemberling said. "New bag-tracking measures ensure that a passenger is on the same flight as his or her luggage, but do little to eliminate the threat of said passenger placing an explosive in the luggage. All bags are currently being screened with bomb-detection machines, but even these $1 million devices are only equipped to detect a limited range of the most conventional explosives."

Added Gemberling: "They're certainly not going to be much help stopping the next guy who wants to blow up a plane with something like a shoe."

Even the stiff measures included in the Aviation and Transportation Security Act, which President Bush recently signed into law, have proven inadequate.

"Improved explosive-detection systems, fortified cockpit doors, more plainclothes sky marshals aboard planes, and mandatory anti-hijacking training for flight crews—none of it could eliminate the possibility of another Sept. 11 with 100 percent certainty," Gemberling said. "This will."

"We've tried every possible alternative, but nothing has worked," Gemberling continued. "For all our efforts, we keep coming back to the same central problem: humans."

Re: Moron tries to blow up Delta Flight

The one thing that makes it worse is the Muslim parents went to the U.S. consulate and reported their son as being radicalized and hostile. Go friggin' figure the one time a Muslim family reports their son we ignore them. Shame on us for that one.

    Would you?

    1. Ban people from standing up in the last hour of flight? He was sitting.

    2. Not issue blankets and pillows on international flights?

    3. Not allow people to access their carry-on bagage? He didn't.

    4. Praise the last people that screened him as "doing their job?"

Last question, if every single person on the 500,000 watch list was searched every time they got on a flight, what percent of all annual flyers would that be?

    1. Less than 3%

    2. Less than .3%?

    3. Less than .03%

    4. Less than .003%

    5. Less than .0003%

    And the winner IS!!

Re: Moron tries to blow up Delta Flight

Its real easy and its already used at a bunch of airport. They use a thing the size of a telephone booth that you stand in and it blowes are across your body and checks it for residue. I've set it off after having been shooting and the like. Prety much anything that is exposive will be picked up. There you go.

Money can be found in one of the millions of other worthless things the GOV has done lately.

Re: Moron tries to blow up Delta Flight

The last time I flew was a copule of weeks ago. What pisses me off is all these muslim looking people who can barely speak english working at the security check point, who in gods green earths brillant fucking IDEA was that one?

Re: Moron tries to blow up Delta Flight

Not a problem guys the new rule is nobody gets to go to the bathroom during the last hour of flight. This will leave enough people ready to piss on the match someone lights to set off an explosive device. Airline security at work.

Re: Moron tries to blow up Delta Flight

Very interesting take on it. Or the lady that has to go every 10 mins getting pissed (pun not intended) and beating the ass for making her hold it.

On a side note. What about those with medical conditions. And how are we to determine who does or doesn't have one. I know that if I have the shits, no TSA order is gonna stop the deluge from come. Let that happen one time and see what they say then.

Re: Moron tries to blow up Delta Flight

It's OK, just keep reading them their Miranda rights and things will get better. This is just bad karma left over from the former administration. At least that's what we are being told. Look for a significant increase in the number of terrorist incidents and corresponding loss of American lives in 2010. They must be laughing their asses off right now knowing that we won't profile and take action commensurate with the level of risk involved. The time for PC is over.

Re: Moron tries to blow up Delta Flight

So what your saying is that there might be another approach to fighting this stuff than showing us a shiny object, and in a soothing voice repeating, "forget, forget, forget..."?

Does this mean that veterans shouldn't be the primary focus of the department of Homeland Security? What happened to the term "Man Caused Disasters"? Unsurprisingly sexist coming from someone who's only qualification was her lesbianation (or is Lesbianity? Lesbianimation?)

Mark Steyn refers to her as Janet Incompetano! And what of our Secretary of State? .............chirp, chirp, chirp

    Yeah, this is much better.

Re: Moron tries to blow up Delta Flight

Frankly, I like Mugatu's approach in Zoolander. Intense brain washing followed by the hypnotic suggestion "Terrorism Bad, USA Good" and the command "Obey my Dog". If we did that to terrorists (excuse me, I should be saying Islamic freedom fighters) then we have at least as good a chance of turning this whole thing around as the current approach.

While thats a good try, the problem lies in the transportation of the firearms to and from other countrys. I don't have all the specifics but I do know there are a number of countrys that the Federal Air Marshales aren't welcome, much less a regular LEO.

To add to that, the FAM programe is a very well designed well layed out programe that put very specific ground rules in place that make the FAM teams on a flight much safer and more importantly, More effective. Another thing that is taught are the places on an aircraft that won't be compleatly detrimental the the integrity of the aircraft.

    Just something to think about.

Some serious ass covering is going on. No doubt there is real gratitude, at upper management levels, that the holidays are obscuring the flimsy explanations and distractions of the double-standard bearers.

Still trying to get stories straight, but it's all still W's fault...
