Mosin Nagant shooting 500 yards with iron sights

Hey guys! Today for the first time I took out the Mosin Nagant 91/30 for some long range shooting. I shot 10 rounds at a man size target 500 yards away. I was perched up on a mountain top. Out of the 10 I hit the target 4 times. Not too bad considering I was using iron sights (no spotter). Just thought i would share this with you.

sheesh,the last part of it had muh head spinnin,thought my new eyes had gone berserk...

4 out of 10 with a 100yr plus yr old design,and ammo type?Surplus or newer?

For me,That aint bad at 500 ,with iron sights ...
I bet with practice you could get 7 or 8 out of 10 hits...

I used to do 7 out of 10 at 900yds with my Finn M39 VKT using surplus. If I missed, it was my fault. I had a Czech mauser that would do9 out of 10. I wish I still had these.

Lol yeah I should have done some better editing on the walk to the target. The ammo I was using was some newer brown bear FMJ. That's my goal, to be able to hit the paper 8/10 times. Thanks for the encouragement. Right now I'm planning on floating the barrel, the stock doesn't need much sanding at all its already almost completely floated. Also I'm going to work on the trigger so it trips a little smoother and sooner. Hopefully with these mods and some more practice I'll be able to get some better results.

I consider that very good shooting, old battle rifle with iron sights and not so great ammo...

Keep plugging away.

It's no precision rifle, but my 91/30 sporter (shortened the barrel to 22" w/ 11 degree target crown) shoots SMK handloads into 2" consistently at 200 meters on a windless day if I do my part. <span style="font-weight: bold">IF</span> you have a good barrel and tight action, they can shoot better than most realize. Zaytsev sure demonstrated that...

Nice shooting- especially with commercial ammo. From looking at the plants in the foreground, looks like there was a bit of a breeze blowing as well.

2" at 200 yards is pretty good with the 91/30, you would think you would get less accurate with a shorter barrel, go figure. There was a little bit of wind that day probably not more than 5 MPH, it rare to get a still day were I'm at. Thanks for the comments! I just finished up floating the barrel and I smoothed and adjusted the trigger, so we'll give it another go soon!

It shot almost as well with the full length barrel, but the 91/30 has a pretty skinny, long barrel and it would start stringing shots as it heated up. The shorter barrel is now a bit stiffer, and that seems to have helped. I was a bit hesitant cutting/crowning myself...yep- I used a hacksaw... and the PTG 11-degree cutter did an amazing job on the crown. I would defy anyone looking at it to tell it wasn't done on a lathe.

That is some really good shooting, especially with iron sights. That is the only thing I really don't like about these rifles, their POI is always off from the POA. I have one 91/30 that is close and accurate however.
