Most Accurate Factory .300 Win Mag ---- Lefty?

I've been lurking over here for a while now, and am about to thin the hunting rifle collection in favor of a nice built, extremely accurate .300 Win Mag but it needs to be left-handed. It's just too darn hard to shoot a right-bolt rifle from prone with a sling. I plan on doing some prone highpower shooting, and using it as a hunting rifle (under 15lbs would be a plus).

I would like something capable of half-moa 5 shot groups with a threaded muzzle, excellent trigger, etc. Any ideas?

I too see your problem in verbiage... 300 win mag maybe the issue.
Do you only want a factory rifle or do you want to start factory then add some mods????
How far do you plan on shooting when prone messing about and how far do you plan on shooting for hunting game??
Big difference, you don’t want to shoot at a deer @ 500yds and hit it in the ass because that may happen…
Do you plan on reloading or running manufactured ammo? This has a lot to do with the accuracy you expect from your purchase as well.

So a factory Remington 300 win mag @ $700 and Savage 116 @ $475 and a Browning A-Bolt 300wsm @ $600
Remington Only makes it in the 700 SPS. Either way you skin it, you have to start somewhere.
What scope you plan on using or buying???

Remington leftys came down in price but if you want strictly out of the box rifle, then Savage has always blown away Remington’s right out of the box...
Savage guarantees 1.5” group or better at 100yds with magnums, Remington won’t give you one, but says standard avg groups for industry…
Bunch of Jerkoffs, so I pushed a little and they said around 3.0”… you could do that with a rock..

If you plan on buying a hunting rifle and hunting large game but some LR fun, you won’t need a $2000+++ custom rig with a $1800 night force on it to kill a deer or an elk at 400yds…
Just rememeber a factory rifle wont be hiting 10” plates at 1500yds all day either…. It’s a tool, many tools out there to do the job your after….
Remember the 30-30 or the 30-06, hell a .243 has killed more deer or elk then all other rifles combined….(not in that order)
Food for thought, you don’t need a magnum to drop either one of them… Bullet placement my friend, that always wins…

Best of luck to ya….

Re: Most Accurate Factory .300 Win Mag ---- Lefty?

Sorry to trip you guys up regarding the built vs factory argument.

1. I handload.
2. I plan on doing long-range hunting with this rifle.
3. I will shoot it from the prone position with a sling in a 1000yd match.

I have a feeling what I need is a full on custom. matthewusmc8791 answered my question in a way, if Savage and Remington are the only ones out there, than that's the way it is.

Re: Most Accurate Factory .300 Win Mag ---- Lefty?

I am a left hand shooter and also a long range shooter. I looked and looked and no one makes a rifle that I wanted to buy and take a chance on. I just had one built up. It is what I wanted but could have saved a few bucks by putting my 700 in a AICS stock.

Rem700LH
27inch Lilja 1:10 three groove
Ops inc break
McMillan A4
20MOA scope base (wanted more but could not find a good one for a left hand action)
Badger ord bottom metal
Badger ord Rings
NF 5.5-22X 56 scope

Grand total? A lot. AI does not make a 338LM in left hand so I settled.

Re: Most Accurate Factory .300 Win Mag ---- Lefty?

I have shot some very accurate savages. Most recent was a 300 WSM and I was very impressed with it for what the guy paid for it. Very accurate and relatively light for the ranges we were shooting. My vote would be for a savage if you want a "factory" gun, have their custom shop do some work on it if you want some extras.

Re: Most Accurate Factory .300 Win Mag ---- Lefty?

Are you an experienced shooter? If so, you're probably not going to need to ask these questions.

If you're not an experienced shooter, no need to build a custom rifle to cut your teeth on. You need to practice fundamentals, shoot lots of .22lr and get a factory .308 Winchester and start working your way up. Then learn hand-loading. THEN build a custom .300 Win Mag if your heart still desires one.

Re: Most Accurate Factory .300 Win Mag ---- Lefty?

i would look at the savage, depending on how much you are looking to spend, look for something with the accutrigger and accustock, that will give you a very good factory rifle (that's my opinion, I happen to love my savages

) for around $750. spend a little more and I think they make one with a heavy barrel. But if your long range hunting, be mindful of weight, a lot of times there is a lot of trekking involved and heavy rifles get even heavier after you have carried them for a couple of hours.

EDIT: There is also plenty of custom add ons for savages for later on down the road as well, but this would get you into a good rifle for the time being.

I have a Remington 700 P w/ a 20 moa badger base and rings as well as badger break. I love it. It has a 26 bbl with a custom trigger and a Vortex 6x24x50 pst. I also reload and with 210 Berger vld's it is a 1hole gun

Re: Most Accurate Factory .300 Win Mag ---- Lefty?

Sorry about the lack of replies guys things have been busy. I am an experienced shooter, and mostly shoot Service rifle XTC matches. I am very experienced with reloading ins and outs, shooting positions, and associated variables with each. I am experienced with gunsmithing and have built a few rifles of my own.
I had Lasik last march and eye fatigue has become such an issue I'm afraid my SR days are numbered, and need to get on the good foot. Shooting a precision rifle 'wrong handed' is a total pain in the ass. Anyone who shoots with a highpower-style sling would know what i'm talking about.

I just ordered a cheapie .300 R700 LH. Ordered a McMillan M40A1 ADJ stock on it with their buttplate spacer system and a 26" Rock 10" twist Varmint contour barrel. Long Rifles Inc is doing the work. When I get my hands on the finished product, I'll gently bead blast and paint the entire rifle in Brownells Teflon Moly, a 3 color desert camo airbrush pattern. I'll be sure and keep you all posted.
This rifle will do hybrid duty between hunting and be a UKD tactical play rifle

. Barrel is too thin for match duty.
